Hospitals are not exactly noted for inspiring the kind of joy joy feelings that send visitors off to party and celebrate unless there’s a birth involved. People tend to come out of them upset or distraught a lot of the time and there’s almost always some kind of pain that makes celebrating impossible. As Bethany Kenyon walks into Prey, she can’t help but wonder her younger sister seems to be bucking that trend, given what had happened with her boyfriend, Billy Hawkes. As she steps into Arsenal’s favorite hangout and watering hole, she finds her sister, Ashley, sitting at their usual spot at the bar.
Bethany Kenyon: Ash?
Ashley doesn’t move and doesn’t bother to turn and acknowledge that Bethany is talking to her. She just sits on her stool staring straight at the liquor collection behind the bar. Bethany, worry covering her face, moves in and sits down next to Ashley.
Bethany Kenyon: Ash, are you…?
Ashley looks at her elder sister and just shakes her head sadly.
Ashley Kenyon: I’m not drunk, no.
Frowning in confusion, Bethany looks around for other things her sister might be doing instead of imbibing potent potables.
Bethany Kenyon: So…?
Ashley nods to the bar.
Ashley Kenyon: So what am I doing in here?
Bethany nods in return.
Bethany Kenyon: Yeah.
Ashley shrugs sadly.
Ashley Kenyon: Where else was I gonna go?
Bethany frowns even harder in confusion.
Bethany Kenyon: I’m sorry?
Ashley nods to the bar all over again.
Ashley Kenyon: This is where we always used to come and hang out and be together…
Comprehension dawns for Bethany.
Bethany Kenyon: And you were feeling alone?
Ashley nods, taping a sip of her glass of Sprite.
Ashley Kenyon: They’re keeping Billy in for a few days and he probably won’t be able to travel for a while.
Sighing heavily, Ashley looks to her sister, the weight of the world apparently on her shoulders.
Ashley Kenyon: Even when he’s home, he won’t be able to do much of anything. They’re gonna tell him he has to take it easy for a while, as if he hasn’t been already!
Bethany nods knowingly.
Bethany Kenyon: So you came to Prey hoping we’d be here?
Ashley shrugs, managing a slight nod of agreement.
Ashley Kenyon: Well, Carrie works here, lives here and Jezzy is… she is, right?
Bethany nods reassuringly.
Bethany Kenyon: Yeah…
Ashley manages a full nod this time in response.
Ashley Kenyon: So I figured there was a good shot at running into somebody here, yes.
Unable to stop herself, Bethany hugs her sister in an almost motherly fashion.
Bethany Kenyon: Oh, Ash…
They remain silent for a time, Bethany releasing Ashley and the two sisters just sitting with neither really knowing what to say to the other. Finally, Ashley takes another sip from her glass and turns to face Bethany again.
Ashley Kenyon: How do you do it?
Bethany frown again, her eyes narrowing.
Bethany Kenyon: Do what?
Ashley nods to the door.
Ashley Kenyon: Deal with having a boyfriend that can’t do things?
Bethany shrugs.
Bethany Kenyon: How did Billy deal with it when it was you?
Ashley frowns in confusion.
Ashley Kenyon: Huh?
Bethany points to Ashley’s head.
Bethany Kenyon: After the first shot at Vince Jones when he used those gloves on you…
Ashley nods as comprehension blooms.
Ashley Kenyon: Oh, right…
She pauses to ponder before shrugging.
Ashley Kenyon: I don’t know, he just kinda did.
Bethany nods.
Bethany Kenyon: That’s pretty much what I do too. I do whatever it seems like I need to do at the time for Brody and that’s what you’re gonna have to do for Billy.
Ashley nods.
Ashley Kenyon: Ok.
Bethany hugs her sister again and the two spend the next few hours just sitting there quietly together, neither really wanting to go home, neither really having any other place to be.
A few hours later, Bethany finally returns home, sits down onto her bed and fires up her webcam.
Bethany Kenyon: So, here we are, what should be the greatest achievement ever in my wrestling career. Tragic Engagement is here and this year, I’m not only actually on the card, I’m in the main event for the UWA World Championship!
She snickers at the thought of where she is and where she’d been.
Bethany Kenyon: Last year was a little weird because I wasn’t even on the card.
She shrugs, nodding knowingly.
Bethany Kenyon: And I know why…
She swallows as if she’s been given a spoonful of something exceptionally nasty.
Bethany Kenyon: That lovely word, “relevance” that certain people like to throw around. I know what it’s like to be considered irrelevant because that’s who I was this time last year.
Shrugging, she smiles wryly, as if at a joke she knows isn’t really funny.
Bethany Kenyon: Hey, we all know it’s true. I was never supposed to be here. I was the crap end of a tag team that wasn’t even deemed worthy of being in the tournament to crown the first champion. I was just Ashley’s older sister, the tag team partner that was holding a spot until her obviously better, younger partner goes solo.
She nods, the smile gone.
Bethany Kenyon: I was the Marty Jannetty, the Jim Neidhart, the Rick Steiner, the Robert Gibson, the Matt Hardy…
She glances off into the distance as if recounting things she’s heard a million times before.
Bethany Kenyon: Ashley was the fiery sister and the choice to be the one who would eventually break out while I was just the one who would stand there and look nice, maybe shake my ass a little and eventually become the hot chick they ask to do everything in the company except wrestle...
Letting out a deep breath, she nods and then glances back to the camera.
Bethany Kenyon: So Tragic Engagement came around the first time and since neither Ash nor I was deemed worthy of the tournament and that was the focus of the show, both Ash and i were an afterthought and got left off the show.
She pauses, shrugging as she smiles slightly.
Bethany Kenyon: It’s funny because that was the show where Aerynn Donnelly and Pauly O’Connor proved that the ones considered afterthoughts are the ones you should be paying attention to. They walked into the main event they were never supposed to be in and made fools of everyone who just assumed that Nick Daniels and Sentinel were going to run them over. For Aerynn, it was a coming out party, for Nick Daniels, it was a swan song that got him labeled a massive “What If?” For Pauly, it was a revelation he’s still trying to prove wasn’t a fluke and for Sentinel, it was a wake-up call that he needed to reevaluate what he was doing and maybe, just maybe, make some adjustments to his game. It was the first monumental moment in UWA’s history and I…
She trails off wistfully.
Bethany Kenyon: Got to watch like everyone else.
She stands there nodding slightly as she seemingly gets lost in her thoughts, pondering the whole situation. A few seconds pass and Bethany looks back into the camera.
Bethany Kenyon: Now it’s a year later and nobody sees me as the weak link in an irrelevant tag team anymore! Ashley and i were the UWA World Tag Team Champions and Ashley is still the UWA North American Champion. I say we were because, as everyone knows by now, we were robbed of that championship standing by the two guys Ash is going to defend her championship against at Tragic Engagement, Gealtachta’s Shonn Maguire and Pauly O’Connor. She’s gonna do her best to give them the asskicking they deserve for that and I…
She shrugs.
Bethany Kenyon: I get the chance to show the world just how wrong they were to think I was nothing this time last year because I get to step into the main event for the UWA World Championship against the only two people who can say they’ve held that particular prize. I have called both of these women my friend and my tag team partner at various times in the last year and now I get to test my skills against the current UWA World Champion, my best friend and Arsenal stablemate, Jeszika Gautier and the original UWA World Champion, the woman who won that first Tragic Engagement main event and shocked the world this time last year, Gealtachta’s own Aerynn Donnelly.
She pauses and nods.
Bethany Kenyon: None of us were ever supposed to be here. Aerynn was supposed to be just some rookie that might amount to something eventually while I was supposed to be the third wheel in a group of much more talented, much more interesting people and Jezzy, she was supposed to be the one who would find her way into things and keep knocking her head against the fabled glass ceiling. She was supposed to be the one who turned out to be a choke artist when it counted and not really ever be able to finally climb that mountain. well, we all proved them wrong on those counts… didn’t we?
She coks her head as if she actually expects an answer to be forthcoming.
Bethany Kenyon: Now Jezzy, you know how much I really hate fighting you and now much I hated it the first time…
Taking a deep breath, she nods, steeling herself.
Bethany Kenyon: I love you, you’re a sister no matter what and I’m going to try to enjoy this, sharing this moment with you. Neither of us was supposed to get here and now that we are…
She smiles broadly, brightly.
Bethany Kenyon: I can’t think of anyone I’d rather share it with. Good luck!
She nods, the smile fading from her face.
Bethany Kenyon: As for you, Aerynn…
The smile is gone.
Bethany Kenyon: I still call you my friend even if you won’t call me that. If I could figure out what went wrong, what happened inside your head and how to fix it, I would. After everything you’ve done, I would still welcome you back but since you seem just hellbent on destroying everything we built last summer…
Her bottom lip starts to quiver as she fights back angry tears.
Bethany Kenyon: How could you do that to us, to me? How could you stick Jezzy, beat up Carrie, inject Pauly and then make me watch as you try to basically kill Brody? How could you do that after everything we went through with Joshua? I stood by you, fought alongside you and was even there for you when Logan turned out to be a bad joke and all you can say is we don’t get a happy ending?
She shakes her head, still fighting back tears.
Bethany Kenyon: What the fuck is wrong with you?
Incredulous, Bethany bites her still twitching bottom lip.
Bethany Kenyon: Jezzy and I are gonna make you wish you had never done any of that and then we’re gonna make sure you see…
Unable to contain it any longer, Bethany’s voice gains a building rage.
Bethany Kenyon: There’s not a chance in hell we’re gonna let you and Gealtachta rule this fucking roost! We’re not gonna let you steal the World Championship back! Just like last year was about proving a point to the world about how wrong people were about you, this year is all about proving a point to you that you were the one who was wrong! I’m walking into this match with a chance to walk out the UWA World Champion but I’m gonna make one promise… whether Jezzy or I walks out the champion, you won’t and if you keep going the way you’re going…
She raises her hand, the tears finally forcing their way out as she reaches forward and turns off the camera.
