Ashley Kenyon sits in the waiting room of the doctor’s office of her boyfriend, Billy Hawkes, located inside the local hospital. She’d been spending a lot of time here lately, waiting for him to be poked, prodded, tested and checked for everything known to medical science in order to explain what was wrong with him, especially the mass found in his arm. As Ashley waits nervously, Nikki Peltier comes walking up the hallway.
Nikki Peltier: Bethy said you’d probably be here.
Ashley nods vacantly.
Ashley Kenyon: Hey, Nik…
Nikki nods, sitting down next to her.
Nikki Peltier: Have you told her yet?
Ashley shakes her head, managing to continue staring at the wall across the hallway from her rather than look Nikki in the face at all.
Ashley Kenyon: Her, Dad, Khary…
Nikki frowns at her, eyes narrowing in confusion.
Nikki Peltier: Why wouldn’t…
Ashley bows her head in shame and guilt.
Ashley Kenyon: They keep changing their minds on what’s wrong with him. Can’t seem to decide if it’s evidence that he’s still on something or if it’s from whatever Aerynn shot him up with in October or if it’s something else entirely. The one doc thinks it’s cancer and they should operate immediately before it has a chance to spread but the other thinks it’s more likely a blood clot and that there’s something else wrong with him.
Nikki nods slowly.
Nikki Peltier: So why don’t they just test him for both?
Ashley swallows hard.
Ashley Kenyon: Because their boss keeps saying they’re both wrong and he’s just a junkie who did it to himself and deserves to reap what he sowed.
Nikki looks at her friend, concern flashing over her face.
Nikki Peltier: Has he been tested for drugs?
Ashley shakes her head.
Ashley Kenyon: No.
Nikki nods slowly and looks away for a second trying to decide if she should ask the next question that’s coming to her mind.
Nikki Peltier: Is there a possibility that he… could be on something...
She pauses and then turns to face Ashley.
Nikki Peltier: Still?
Ashley shakes her head.
Ashley Kenyon: Only if he has somebody else shooting it for him. His dexterity has been crap for months, couldn’t shoot if he wanted to.
Nikki swallows hard, still not sure she really wants to go down this road.
Nikki Peltier: There’s other ways…
Ashley shrugs, looking at her friend.
Ashley Kenyon: We were never smokers, Nik.
Nikki cocks her head knowingly.
Nikki Peltier: Well, that’s not entirely true, is it?
Ashley starts to retort but then nods as she realizes what Nikki is really saying.
Ashley Kenyon: He likes cigarettes, yes. I don’t… the smell is fucking terrible.
Taking a deep breath, Ashley turns back towards the wall.
Ashley Kenyon: I make him go outside.
Nikki nods.
Nikki Peltier: And you?
Ashley’s head snaps around to let her stare at Nikki in shock.
Ashley Kenyon: I don’t smoke, you know that!
Nikki nods sadly.
Nikki Peltier: But you have asked the rest of us to before…
Ashley stares at Nikki for a second, disbelief creeping into her voice.
Ashley Kenyon: Nik, are you asking me if we’ve started smoking crack or tar or something?
Nikki swallows hard again and then nods.
Nikki Peltier: You used to like that some, ice too.
Ashley shakes her head.
Ashley Kenyon: I only smoked coke a couple of times, always seemed to go over better when we were all snorting than the couple of times I wanted to try it the other way. Ice always tasted weird and made us a little jittery…
Now it’s Nikki’s turn to have her head snap around like it’s on a swivel.
Nikki Peltier: Us?
Ashley nods.
Ashley Kenyon: Yeah, me, Jezzy, Bethy…
She pauses, pondering the moment.
Ashley Kenyon: I don’t think you were there the first time.
Sitting back in her chair, Ashley nods as the memories flood over her.
Ashley Kenyon: The second, it was all we could find and you’d already gone home. Jezzy and Bethy were NOT fans and we never brought it up again because we always seemed to be able to find coke and drink ourselves happy so…
Nikki nods knowingly.
Nikki Peltier: Yeah…
Ashley just stares forward while Nikki continues to battle within herself.
Nikki Peltier: So, have you guys been doing anything?
Ashley shakes her head.
Ashley Kenyon: Not since October when the party pretty much just stopped cold turkey whether we all wanted it to or not. I mean, you had kinda tapered off anyway because of Richie but the rest of us…
She shakes her head.
Ashley Kenyon: Jezzy made herself stop and Bethy stopped because she was afraid that she would turn into that. Billy and I got hurt and couldn’t if we wanted to for a while and then after that, what was the point?
Shrugging, Ashley shakes her head again, looking wistful.
Ashley Kenyon: It wasn’t fun if we weren’t…
Nikki manages a small smile.
Nikki Peltier: Without the whole communal bit?
Ashley nods her agreement.
Ashley Kenyon: Yeah...
Nikki nods and hugs Ashley.
Nikki Peltier: I’m sorry…
Ashley shakes her head.
Ashley Kenyon: Don’t be…
Nikki sits back from her friend and Ashley nods to the doorway just up the hall.
Ashley Kenyon: Anyway, I haven’t really done anything in a while and Billy’s hands have made sure he can’t.
Before she can go on, nurses go rushing by with a gurney. Ashley and Nikki stand up as they hurry the gurney into the room Billy is in.
Ashley Kenyon: What… what the fuck is going on?
Before anyone answers, the gurney comes bursting out of the room with Billy on it, shaking all over.
Ashley Kenyon: Billy…. BILLY!!!
The nurses and the gurney shoot by her and rush to the elevator. The doctor rushes out and nods to Ashley and Nikki.
Doc: You’re his contact, right?
Ashley nods.
Doc: He started to have difficulty breathing and then started seizing. We’re taking him down to the OR. That’s all we know, if you’ll come downstairs with us, you can wait down there and I will come tell you when I know something more.
Ashley and Nikki nod, following the doctor downstairs. As they come to the waiting room, everyone else involved disappears into the OR. Nikki guides Ashley into the waiting area and sits her down. As Ashley starts to almost shake, Nikki whips out her phone.
Nikki Peltier: B? Nik… I’m at the hospital, Ash needs us right now.
She quickly hangs up and calls Jeszika as well as they wait for word on Billy.
A phone’s camera opens on Ashley Kenyon sitting on a long red couch in what appears to be a hospital waiting area with most of the lights turned off. Wearing a slashed Metallica “Ride the Lightning” t-shirt that looks like she’s been wearing it for several days and a pair of old blue jeans that look like she’ll have to surgically remove them because they’re so tightly hugging her frame, Ashley allows her hair to fall wherever it feels like today, exhaustion written all over her face.
Ashley Kenyon: You know, I honestly thought things would get better when Joshua McBride got knocked off his damn high horse and got shown to be a whole lot of fucking hot air.
She shakes her head, looking away from the camera and staring off to the right.
Ashley Kenyon: I thought, while that fight was going on, that if we just expose him to the world, he’ll lose his power over everybody, the whole live in fear thing that had seemingly fallen over the entire UWA would go away and we could just go back to fighting matches again.
She hangs her head, feeling slightly guilty and ashamed at this admission.
Ashley Kenyon: I really did think through that whole thing that, somehow, we’d come out the other end and we’d all be fine...
Pausing for a second to collect her thoughts, she shakes her head, still staring at the floor.
Ashley Kenyon: I wasn’t the only one who thought that, I know I wasn’t…
Sighing heavily, Ashley leans forward, looking like she might almost get sick
Ashley Kenyon: But I was wrong.
Swallowing hard, Ashley manages to look up to the camera, eyes red and puffy as if she’s been crying for hours.
Ashley Kenyon: Joshua’s legacy is Gealtachta and all the things they seem to be doing to hurt people for basically no reason at all. People like Kyle Travis can call Joshua a toothless and irrelevant bastard now but there’s no denying the effect Joshua and the Children have had because that effect is why I’m sitting here in the dark waiting to hear if my boyfriend is about to be put on dangerous medications for the rest of his life!
She glances towards the door, looking through the windows and hoping nothing else happens to make the situation any worse.
Ashley Kenyon: As many people know, I’ve been dating a man by the name of Billy Hawkes who works as the head of security for a local bar here in New Orleans called Prey and sometimes as a roadie for a band that calls the bar home called the Red Hoods. My manager, Nikki Peltier, dates the guitar player from the band and yeah, I know, this is where you start asking me why you care about who we all date if it’s not somebody like Brody Montgomery.
She nods knowingly, just a hint of annoyance creeping in as she does so.
Ashley Kenyon: Yeah, I know some people out there will ask that and fuck them for being that fucking arrogant and uppity about things because you know damn good and well if I’m sitting in a hospital and talking about medical problems, I’m damn well about to tell you so shut up and pay attention!
She pounds the couch with her fist for a second and then shakes her head.
Ashley Kenyon: I’m sorry… where was I?
Pondering this for a second, she glances out the windows to the OR door and then nods.
Ashley Kenyon: Right… Billy…
Gathering herself together, Ashley takes a deep breath and looks down at the floor again.
Ashley Kenyon: Billy and I have been dating, what I would call seriously dating, since last summer and basically cohabitating since October when Vince Jones tried to cheat his way to immortality at my expense. It was during that time that Aerynn Donnelly decided to give in to her Joshua-induced paranoia and gave all of us that called her friend, the knife in the back as far as she could push it.
Shaking her head again, Ashley looks up into the camera.
Ashley Kenyon: Punching Jezzy was one thing but then going after Carrie and Billy the way she did…
She stands up, anger radiating off of her.
Ashley Kenyon: We’re here because of that incident because ever since Aerynn forced the needle on Billy, nothing in his body has worked right. Whatever she shot him up with, or thought she was shooting him up with, was cut with some kind of poison that has made his own blood start fighting his body. First, it made his hands go numb, then it messed with his motor control because he was getting miniclots around nerves.
She points to the OR door just off camera.
Ashley Kenyon: Well now, it’s almost killed him and possibly scarred him for life because the injection site threw off a big clot that went to his lungs and brain!
Her finger moves from pointing at the OR door to pointing accusingly into the camera.
Ashley Kenyon: You crazy bitch, you… you and your jailbird boyfriend, you almost killed him… twice! Now I may not be able to get a hold of you, but Shonn, they’ve served you up to me on a silver platter and they let Pauly come with you. Pauly talked about me being worried about this basically being a handicap match and you know what, i don’t give a fuck that it’s a handicap match because i want both of y’all’s blood anyway!
Her hand drops as she shakes with rage.
Ashley Kenyon: Pauly, you really need to take a look at yourself and realize you are NOT a good guy anymore and this act you put on every so often about being a bad ass too…
She shakes her head.
Ashley Kenyon: Hellhound, my ass, you’re their lapdog! It’s pretty damn obvious that you’re the third wheel in that group and pretty much just follow what the other two direct the group to and that it’s entirely possible they don’t bother to tell you where you’re going before you get there. It’s the bummer about being that third wheel, it doesn’t matter which side of the car you’re on because you’re always in the rear!
She nods, taking a step forward.
Ashley Kenyon: Now I know, you’re both accomplished fighters and that you’re gonna try to do to me what Vince Jones tried to do and you might just go to the same lengths or even further than he did just because you can with the numbers advantage but I’m here to tell you, boys, for what you’ve both been in on doing to Billy, for what y’all did to Carrie and what you’re obviously gonna keep on doing to everyone else… not only am I not upset at having to fight both of you at once, I can’t wait! Tragic Engagement can’t get here fast enough, especially if it turns out that Billy is going to be on meds for his condition for the rest of his life. You fucked his blood up and now I want yours! Hellhound and Devil’s Hammer be damned, I am gonna bleed your asses until there’s nothing left and then keep going!
She walks up to the camera and leans down close.
Ashley Kenyon: You want to be able to walk around and tell the world that Gealtachta is King Shit and owns all the gold?
She nods sharply.
Ashley Kenyon: Well, you picked this fight, now I get to make you choke on that very gold you want to hold so badly!
