Sitting at her kitchen table, the former UWA Television Champio, “the Hong Kong Sensation” Amy Zing fills out the back of a postcard. In very neat handwriting, she writes “UWA Cataclysm, World Arena, Colorado Springs, CO, December 21st, 2014. UWA Television Championship Match: Amy Zing © VS Lacey Roberts. Results: Lacey Roberts wins Television Championship”. Placing the pen down, she lifts the postcard and blows on it to help the ink dry a bit. Slowly, she gets up from her seat and walks to the living room.
She walks to the small bookshelf she uses as a trophy case of sorts and picks up the pile of postcards. Setting the new one down, she unwraps the rubber band on the stack and adds the new one before she places the rubber band back on. She places the stack back on the shelf. The shelf seems a bit empty without the Television Championship sitting on it. The only trace of the title is a framed photo from Raising Hell showing her holding the championship up.
“The Hong Kong Sensation” looks at the empty space for a moment and shakes her head. Despite the loss of her title, she smiles a bit and sighs.
“I cannot exactly say that Cataclysm went the way I had hoped it would go for me. I really had wanted to go out there, beat Lacey Roberts and retain the UWA Television Championship. I confess that it was a bit of a disappointment really to lose the title. I knew it would happen, but still, it was not the outcome I would have liked to have had.”
“I will, however, not make excuses for my loss. I will not stand here and say that Lacey got lucky or that she didn’t earn it or anything. I am not going to take anything away from Lacey Roberts. As much as I may not like it, I will admit that she did exactly what she said she was going to do and beat me for the Television Championship. I don’t like it, but I accept it. It was a close match and there are parts where it could have gone either way, but it went her way. Maybe next time, it will go my way and I will win, or maybe not. Either way, I want there to be a next time as I would welcome another chance to face Lacey Roberts.”
Amy shrugs.
“Oh well.”
“The Hong Kong Sensation” looks up from the photo of her holding the Television Championship and to the ever growing pile of postcards she keeps on the shelf. In that collection is recorded every single match she has wrestled since she started the collection.
“Before the match I told Lacey that win, lose or draw, I would have a tomorrow, that there was something beyond that match for me. I will not focus on the loss or obsess over it. I will move on. After all the Chinese symbol for crisis is the same for opportunity.”
Amy closes her hand into a fist and gives a quick and determined nod at that statement. She smiles.
“And right now, I have two awesome opportunities that I never expected to get. The first opportunity, and I am not sure how I earned it, is a chance to face Ashley Kenyon for the North American Championship at next week’s Monday Night Mayhem, which is amazing and a huge opportunity. The other opportunity is that I am up for the Face of the Year Award, and really, that is a huge honor. I mean, I am up for the same award as and, and I find that just so incredible. I know it may sound cliché for me to say that it is just an honor to be nominated, but it actually is an honor to be nominated. I really don’t know which I consider a bigger really; getting this title shot against an outstanding competitor like Ashley Kenyon, or being up for Face of the Year. They are just so unexpected. I may not have won the award, but still, it really was an honor to be nominated.”
“As I told Lacey before Cataclysm, win, lose or draw, I still had a tomorrow to look forward to. I would like to think that I had a pretty good 2014 with winning the Television Championship and holding it for 119 days and getting nominated for Face of the Year. I would have liked to have had a few defenses as, but it is biweekly shows and things like that happen. I really don’t know why, but it does. Oh well. That is neither here nor there. I still stand by my statement that I had a good 2014.”
“However, that was 2014. I now look forward to 2015 in the hopes that this upcoming year provides greater opportunities, new challenges and more to look forward to aside form another Avengers movie and the new Star Wars, because those are probably things a lot of people are looking forward to, but I meant something more related to wrestling and my career or just the UWA in general. And for my 2015, I have a North American Championship title match to look forward to. I can’t think of a better way to start of 2015.”
“I think it is hard to argue against K.I.S.S. as Tag Team of the Year. I would vote for them if I could vote in the awards. I am actually not sure if I can vote in the End of the Awards, not that I would vote for myself, but I would vote for K.I.S.S. I really don’t know if I can vote in the awards or not. I never really checked, not really sure why I never bothered to check actually. I suppose it may have to do with not knowing that the UWA had awards. However, it is the first year the UWA has been open, so it stands to reason that one could not assume there would be awards. Most places do have awards, so I suppose it should have been a safe bet that the UWA would have awards. Still, I never really bothered to ask if I was able to vote in them. I really have no idea how they would be able tell if I voted or not, but I would still feel bad if I did vote and then I found out I was not allowed to vote. It may be weird, but that’s the type of person I am. Still, I suppose I should have asked.”
Realizing that she has gotten off topic and is really just now rambling, Amy stops talking. She closes her eyes and takes a deep breath. She exhales slowly to calm herself and regain her focus on the matter at hand. Finally, she opens her eyes.
“Anyway, it is hard to argue the year Ashley and Bethany had in 2014. I don’t think anyone really had the year they had. I mean Vince Jones and Aerynn Donnelly had pretty good years in 2014 with long title reigns, but Aerynn did have all the issues with the Children of Nephilim, but she did spend most of the year as the UWA Champion, so that has to count for something and Vince spent most of the year as the North American Champion, which is also good. But I think K.I.S.S. had a better year. Ashley and Bethany proved themselves a dominant team here in UWA. I think they have lost one match as a team in their first year. They rose up with Jeszika Gautier and Aerynn Donnelly to fight the Children of Nephilim. They went on to become the UWA Tag Team Champions, and at Cataclysm, Ashley defeated Vince Jones, a dominant champion that seemed virtually untouchable, to become North American Champion. So, it has been a really great year for K.I.S.S. It’s probably safe to say that most people would want a year like that.”
Amy turns from the bookcase and a large bay window on the opposite side near her sofa. She looks towards the window that lets in the light from outside.
“But that was 2014 and their 2015 could start off with losing everything. Next week, K.I.S.S. is going to defend the Tag Team Championships. This week, though, Ashley defends the North American Championship against me.”
Amy quickly stops talking and looks as if she has been caught saying something offensive or that can be taken out of context. She waves her hands, like she is trying to erase the comment somehow.
“Now I am not saying they will lose both champions, just that they could.”
Amy lowers her hands and shrugs.
“This is the sort of business where anything can happen, and anyone can beat anyone on any given night. Now I will admit that I have doubts that a vast majority of people, who may want to see me succeed, actually think I can pull this off. And they are probably right. But, I’ve never really bothered to let the idea of if I can do something stop me from trying. I may lose this match, but that can be said of every match I go into. I can only go out into that ring and give it everything I have just like I do every time I go out there.”
“I’m the underdog, the dark horse, the person no one thinks is going to win, but sometimes, not as often as I am sure people would like to see me, but sometimes, I manage to pull out the victory. I have a belief that things will work out. I try to stay optimistic about things. I may lose, but you have to admit, I at least give everything I have to try and win the match. I like to think that every underdog gets their day, and I am hoping my day is next Monday Night Mayhem.”
“Ashley Kenyon, I do respect you as a person and a wrestler. You’re a nice person and you have accomplished a lot in the UWA. You’ve quickly risen to the top here in the UWA as a Tag Team Champion and the North American Champion. Ashley, you are the first person in the UWA to ever hold two championships at the same time. It is not hard to see why people should respect you. You and Bethany have risen to the top of the UWA. You and Bethany are the UWA’s most dominant tag team. You are the first, and right now only, dual champion in the UWA. And all of that was just in 2014. By the end of 2015, you and Bethany could hold every championship in the UWA. You could Triple Crown or become the first Grand Slam Champion in the history of the UWA. Really Ashley, the sky is the limit for you and Bethany in 2015.”
Amy moves to her bay windows. Leaning against the frame, she looks out to the view of San Francisco from her window.
“However, my respect for you and what you have accomplished is not going to stop me from trying to beat you for the North American Championship. In fact, ironically, it makes me what to beat you more. That arena is going to be filled with fans wanting to see us in the ring. They will be cheering us on, wanting to see both of us win the match. It’s going to be the same in the UWA Championship match between Silver Baron and Jeszika Gautier. I say, personally, we go out there and give them the match of the night. We go out there and give them everything we have. I know that’s what I plan to do, and I very much doubt that you are going to give anything less than everything you have Ashley.”
“We all want to have a great 2015. We all want to do things this year, be it win titles or awards or main event or get up that ladder or have that one really great match. In 2015, I may crash and burn many times before 2016, but I am going to soar at least once before then and Monday Night Mayhem may be that night.”
“Yes, you will have only held the title for two weeks as of Monday Night Mayhem, and I am sorry about trying to end your title reign before it really had a chance to begin. It may be a terrible excuse, but I assure you that it is nothing personal, just strictly business. It may be selfish of me, but I have to admit that I would like to win the North American Championship some time in my UWA run. I suppose sooner is better than later, and I can hardly think of a better way to start 2015 than with the biggest upset of my career.”
She turns and leans against the wall near the window, looking upwards at the ceiling.
“There are some people, Ashley, who would call this match my redemption due to losing the UWA Television Championship at Cataclysm.”
Amy looks down from the ceiling and shakes her head as if disagreeing with that idea. She turns and looks back out the window.
“Personally, I do not see it as redemption. Redemption implies I need to feel sorry for something and as I said, Lacey won the title fair and square. A more accurate redemption would be a rematch with Lacey for the Television Championship or just a match against Lacey to see if I can actually beat her, and actually beat her. That would be redemption. This is not redemption. This is just a chance to beat one of the best in the UWA and enter Tragic Engagement as the UWA North American Champion.”
Amy raises her hands, closing them into fists while she looks out the window. She is smiling, clearly eager and anticipating this match with Ashley Kenyon.
“So Ashley, at Monday Night Mayhem, I am going out to that ring and I am going to try to kick your head off and become UWA North American Champion. I step into the ring with one of the best the UWA has to offer, to try and kick her head off and beat her for a title. It may be impossible, a long shot and instead just end with me down on the mat getting pinned and losing, but that has never stopped me from trying before and it will not stop me now or ever.”
“At Monday Night Mayhem, with the North American Championship on the line, win, lose or drawn, I am going to show you and everyone watching why I hope to start my 2015 with the biggest upset of my career, why I could be the North American Champion and why I am simply Amy Zing.”
“So I will see you Monday and I wish you good luck, not that I really think you need it, but it can't hurt.”
The scene fades out on a determined looking Amy Zing as she looks out her window.
She walks to the small bookshelf she uses as a trophy case of sorts and picks up the pile of postcards.
