Sitting in her living room playing a game on computer, Bethany Kenyon switches over to video from the UWA Fearless show to continue the conversation currently going on with her sister and usual tag team partner, Ashley Kenyon. As the video of Ashley’s match with Vince Jones plays for the umpteenth time, Bethany’s gaze starts to fall in guilt and shame.
Bethany Kenyon: I’m sorry… we…
She shakes her head sadly.
Bethany Kenyon: I’m sorry you didn’t get to get the loss out of your system.
Without thinking, Ashley nods as she sits on the couch just across from the table her sister is sitting at, almost instantly regretting it. She clutches at her head and nods again.
Ashley Kenyon: Yeah… that went well, didn’t it? That match?
Not looking at her sister, Bethany responds while still staring at her computer screen even as Ashley grimaces in pain.
Bethany Kenyon: For a lot of it, yeah it did.
Ashley moves to the couch and sits down, closing her eyes.
Ashley Kenyon: Til the end when I tried to pick him up…
Bethany just shakes her head, still not seeing the pain written all over her little sister’s face.
Bethany Kenyon: Ash… what were you thinking when you did that?
Ashley shrugs and then nods to
Ashley Kenyon: What were you thinking when you…
She pauses and nods to the image on the computer screen of them stepping in at the end of the UWA World Championship match between Aerynn Donnelly and Jeszika Gautier.
Ashley Kenyon: Did that?
Bethany goes silent, having not really considered this question herself she doesn’t really have an answer, good or otherwise.
Bethany Kenyon: I…
Ashley nods, again instantly regretting the gesture.
Ashley Kenyon: Same thing I was, I’d imagine…
Bethany stares at the image on her screen and shrugs.
Bethany Kenyon: I guess… yeah…
Ashley leans forward, hands to her head. She starts rubbing her temples, her eyes closed as her body starts to try and rebel.
Ashley Kenyon: I can admit I wasn’t thinking much there…
Bethany glances back at her and, for the first time, sees the condition of her little sister. Taking in the sight before her, Bethany swallows her worry, at least for the moment.
Bethany Kenyon: You can?
Ashley just continues to massage her own temples.
Ashley Kenyon: I can admit that, yeah. I can admit I don’t know what to do or how everything in that match happened…
Ashley trails off, seemingly losing her train of thought in mid-sentence. Bethany looks closer at her sister as Ashley seemingly swallows.
Bethany Kenyon: Ash?
She frowns as her sister just sits there, failing to respond much at all.
Bethany Kenyon: Ash?
Again, there is no response.
Bethany Kenyon: Ash… what’s going on?
Ashley manages to look up, squinting.
Ashley Kenyon: Hmm… when did it get so bright in here?
Bethany stands up as Ashley goes back to looking down at her feet, her eyes closing again as she slowly starts back rubbing at her own temples just as before.
Bethany Kenyon: Ash… how long has this been going on?
Ashley fails to respond and Bethany takes a step towards her.
Bethany Kenyon: Ash?
Bethany moves in closer and squats down next to the chair, her hand laying gently on Ashley’s back.
Bethany Kenyon: Ash… how long?
Ashley swallows hard.
Ashley Kenyon: How long… what?
Bethany exhales forcefully, trying not to panic.
Bethany Kenyon: Do you remember the match with Vince Jones?
Ashley nods ever so slightly.
Ashley Kenyon: Yeah, he looked surprised he couldn’t put me down and almost worried about the title shot match…
Bethany shakes her head.
Bethany Kenyon: Not the first one, Honey. The second one…
Ashley manages a small nod again.
Ashley Kenyon: That’s the one I tried to pick him up, right?
Bethany nods.
Bethany Kenyon: Yes… do you actually remember doing that?
Ashley goes quiet, her voice losing all its bass in the process.
Ashley Kenyon: My head hurts…
Bethany sits back, her entire body going cold.
Bethany Kenyon: Ash, how long has your head hurt?
Ashley swallows hard again.
Ashley Kenyon: Off and on…
Bethany nods again and quickly pulls out her phone. She dials a number and then holds the phone to her ear.
Bethany Kenyon: Nik? Yeah, Ash is here at my house and…
Nikki cuts her off.
Nikki Peltier: She has a concussion, doesn’t she?
Bethany stares at her sister on shock.
Bethany Kenyon: Yeah… how did you…?
Nikki sighs heavily.
Nikki Peltier: She spaced out at the hospital and then again on the ride home. I think she got sick when we got off the plane but we were all so worried about Carrie and Billy and trying to keep Jezzy from going off the reservation that she was able to hide it some.
Bethany bites her lip as guilt and shame wash over her.
Bethany Kenyon: God…. dammit…
Nikki’s voice comes back quickly.
Nikki Peltier: Don’t…
Before Bethany can even ask her, Nikki’s voice comes back again.
Nikki Peltier: Don’t beat yourself up over this, Bethy. Matter of fact, don’t let Ashley beat herself up over losing either because I’m pretty sure it’s not something she needs to feel badly about at all.
Bethany just stands there for a minute before her curiosity gets the better of her.
Bethany Kenyon: Why’s that?
Nikki exhales deeply.
Nikki Peltier: I’m having some evidence looked at but I’m pretty sure Vince Jones pulled a fast one on our Ashley.
Bethany frowns hard.
Bethany Kenyon: A fast one? What do you think he did?
Nikki’s voice comes back again almost immediately.
Nikki Peltier: Not until I make sure we have proof.
Bethany nods slowly.
Bethany Kenyon: Ok.
As she stands there, Ashley stands up and hurries up the hall to the bathroom.
Bethany Kenyon: Oh no…
Nikki’s voice comes back quickly, her own worry apparently elevating.
Nikki Peltier: What?
Bethany starts up the hallway after her sister.
Bethany Kenyon: I think she’s getting sick again…
Nikki sighs again.
Nikki Peltier: I’m almost there. Jezzy’s coming too…
Nikki pauses, sounding somewhat guilty.
Nikki Peltier: I didn’t call Billy, do you think I should?
Bethany nods as just as she reaches the bathroom.
Bethany Kenyon: Yes.
She turns the corner of the doorway just in time to see Ashley sits back against the wall, the toilet flushing in front of her.
Bethany Kenyon: I’ll see ya when y’all get here.
She hangs up and then sits down in front of Ashley.
Bethany Kenyon: Heeeey…
Ashley looks up at her big sister and nods.
Ashley Kenyon: I’m sorry…
Before Bethany can even answer, Ashley bursts into tears.
Ashley Kenyon: I’m sorry I let you guys down! I’m sorry! I’m sorry! I’M SORRY!!!
Bethany moves in quickly and takes her sister into as embrace.
Bethany Kenyon: Ash… sssshhh… it’s ok…
She hugs her sister and gently strokes the younger Kenyon’s head.
Bethany Kenyon: Nik and Jezzy are coming over and Nik’s gonna call Billy too. He’ll give you a ride home or you guys stay over here if you want.
Ashley manages a nod as she leans in against her sister’s chest.
Ashley Kenyon: I should have told you guys…
Bethany shakes her head.
Bethany Kenyon: It’s ok, Sweetie. Goes with the injury…
Leaning forward, Bethany kisses the top of Ashley’s head.
Bethany Kenyon: Besides, I think you admitted a lot already tonight.
Ashley nods slowly before managing to sit up straighter.
Ashley Kenyon: I did...
She pauses, swallowing hard in the hopes that she won’t get sick again.
Ashley Kenyon: But you got some stuff you need to admit too, Bethy.
Bethany frowns in confusion.
Bethany Kenyon: Like what?
Ashley looks her sister dead in the eyes.
Ashley Kenyon: That it’s not all your fault…
As her eyes narrow, the confusion is evident on Bethany’s face.
Bethany Kenyon: What?
Ashley nods seriously.
Ashley Kenyon: Everything! You try so hard to be there for everyone else, to take on so much for all of us and you take it all to heart! When Mama died, you tried to take her place as best you could, you tried to include me in everything so I wouldn’t feel like I’d lost everything and I love you for it, Bethy, really I do…
Sensing what’s coming, Bethany nods slightly.
Bethany Kenyon: But?
Ashley shrugs sadly.
Ashley Kenyon: But when are you gonna let us help you for once?
Just as she starts to answer, the front door can be heard opening and voices follow close behind it.
Bethany Kenyon: We’re in the bathroom guys!
The front door closes and the voices move in closer. Within a minute, Nikki Peltier and Jeszika Gautier appear in the doorway, both looking worried.
Nikki Peltier: Hey…
Bethany and Ashley both nod back.
Bethany Kenyon: Hey…
Nikki and Jeszika move in close and along with Bethany, they help Ashley stand up. As they move her to the living room, a knock comes on the front door. Bethany moves off to let her friends guide her sister to the couch and answers the door. Standing there looking nervous is Ashley’s boyfriend, Billy Hawkes. Bethany nods, smiling and motions for him to enter her house. Billy does so and makes a beeline for Ashley on the couch, joining the group of anxious onlookers seeing to her health and comfort. Bethany nods, closing the door before joining “the party.”
An hour later, she’s moved her laptop to her bedroom and stares at it for a second. Nikki, Jeszika, Ashley and Billy were all still in the next room having all decided to spend the night rather than try to move Ashley. She nods to the computer and then turns on the webcam.
Bethany Kenyon: I want so badly to look forward to this match with Quentin Sharpe. I want to more than I’ve wanted anything in a long time…
She glances over to the door of the room just behind the computer and shakes her head.
Bethany Kenyon: It’s everything I could ask for in a match. It pushes the tag team scene, it’s with a top flight talent that has no reason to cheat or otherwise try to push a personal agenda. There’s no whining, no bitching, no crying about the company trying to fuck somebody over, no attacking family members involved, nothing but the purest form of competition between a competitor who was a champion and a competitor who is a champion walking to the ring to see which one is better on that particular night.
She tries to smile at the thought but can’t quite seem to do it.
Bethany Kenyon: And yet…
Looking like she wants to smack herself, Bethany shakes her head.
Bethany Kenyon: My sister is sitting in the next room right now fading in and out. Sometimes she knows exactly where she is and what’s going on and sometimes she has no idea and doesn’t remember coming inside wherever it is she is at the time. She’s gotten blinding headaches and been sick like she either has the flu or worse lately and it’s all because Vince Jones somehow managed to concuss her in a match where she walked out of the ring looking perfectly fine.
Her jaw tightens as she fights off whatever she’s feeling.
Bethany Kenyon: I don’t know if this is proof he did something, proof he had somebody roofie her, proof of voodoo or hoodoo or something or if it’s just evidence that he’s a bad ass motherfucker who can hit like nobody else in professional wrestling…
Shaking her head, Bethany sighs heavily.
Bethany Kenyon: But it’s there, staring us all in the face and I can’t put it out of my head. I just…
She shakes her head again, obviously holding back tears.
Bethany Kenyon: Not when my best friend in the world is slowly falling apart, another friend has fallen apart, a third is doing her best to try and make everyone reconsider ever becoming friends with her in the first place and the one person in this world I should be worrying about more than anyone else doesn’t really wanna talk to me much all over again because that third friend decided she needed to send a message to people who were just trying to help her.
She closes her eyes and steps back from the computer.
Bethany Kenyon: I should be on cloud nine the way things are going professionally with all the championships currently held by Arsenal and with the gift being given to me of this match with Quentin Sharpe and yet, everything around me personally is flying crazy like we’re all on the bullet train to hell and the brake cable has been ripped out! We’re all lost somewhere between heaven and hell and even if we wanted off this train, it’s going too fast to go now....
Her eyes open and she stares into the camera looking almost defiant.
Bethany Kenyon: Everyone’s trying to make us give up, give in and shove everyone and every thing we love aside. Joshua McBride’s been trying it for months, bringing Maiko, the twins and God knows how many nameless, faceless pieces of cannon fodder into the fray. Brody Montgomery tried for a while and then stopped when he realized what he was doing wasn’t the greatest thing ever. Vince Jones and Kyle Travis both do it out of ego and a personal need for everyone to tell them that their insecurities are unfounded and Aerynn Donnelly does it because she was pushed too far, for too long by too many people and just couldn’t take it anymore and I’m here to tell all of you...
She leans forward, her hands landing on either side of the computer.
Bethany Kenyon: I’m not going anywhere and you can’t make me stop trying!
She nods definitively and stands up, folding her arms in front of her chest.
Bethany Kenyon: You can all try all you want to make me give up being who I am but you will never make me give up on somebody I love and consider my family, not even you Aerynn! You can yell and scream all you want but I will never give up on the hope that the real you will some day find her way back out and until either that happens or you leave this mortal coil, I will be who I am...
Her arms fall, landing near her sides.
Bethany Kenyon: I am and always shall be… your friend…
She nods, her eyes moistening again.
Bethany Kenyon: Quentin, I’ll see you in the ring and I promise you, even stuck in this weird place between holiness and damnation, I’m gonna give you whatever I have! It might be enough, it might not be, but it’s what you’re going to get come what may!
