A guard walks down the hallway of a correctional facility somewhere in the state of Massachusetts, taking care not to let any of the comments from the inmates make him lose either concentration or a step as he proceeds down the hallway to the next checkpoint. A second guard meets him there and grins.
G2: What we got today, Charlie?
The first guard, called Charlie by nearly everyone, nods ahead of him.
Charlie: He’s gettin’ out, Tommy.
The second guard frowns.
Tommy: Who is?
Charlie sighs.
Charlie: Maguire.
Tommy nods, realization flooding over him.
Tommy: Is THAT why everyone’s so wicked hopped up today… ?
Charlie nods looking almost sad. Tommy sucks in a deep breath and lets it out in an exasperated huff.
Tommy: Shit… they’ll be fuckin’ unbearable on the way out!
Charlie nods knowingly.
Charlie: Don’t I know it, they were already starting on the way in and they tried to keep that hush hush.
Tommy almost laughs.
Tommy: You know that won’t fly in here. It was gonna get out especially when it comes to him.
Charlie nods again like he’s heard this a million times before.
Charlie: Yeah, but you know McLoughlin still thinks he runs the tightest ship on the planet…
Tommy can’t help but chuckle now.
Tommy: Always has, always will.
Charlie leans against the barred door and shakes his head.
Charlie: You think this is a legit release or you think some strings got pulled?
Tommy shrugs.
Tommy: If he was gonna have them strings pulled, he’d have done it before he got here. Who chooses to rot in this hellhole for four years if you don’t have to?
Charlie glances back at their roster of guests and shakes his head.
Charlie: You’d be surprised sometimes on that one, Tommy. There’s quite the collection back there and some of them get out and can’t wait to get back. They wouldn’t know what to do without the place…
Tommy nods solemnly.
Tommy: Yeah, like Smithy?
Charlie nods his agreement.
Charlie: Exactly like Smithy.
Tommy glances back at the cellblock behind him.
Tommy: Which one you think he is?
Charlie stares down the hallway in the same direction.
Charlie: I think he’s one who’s been counting down the days ‘til he gets out since the first second he was here and he’s not gonna miss us at all.
Tommy nods and opens the door to the checkpoint.
Tommy: Good luck.
Charlie nods and walks through the gate.
Charlie: Thanks.
Charlie makes his way down the hallway and comes to a stop at the proper cell.
Charlie: Number 6!
The door slides open and a man with long blonde hair, dressed in blue jeans and a black UWA t-shirt sent to him recently to celebrate a birthday stands up from the bed holding the only things he has in this world, a stack of letters and a picture of Aerynn Donnelly that appears to be a good six years old.
Charlie: Maguire, let’s go.
The blonde man nods and steps into the light just as he’s been instructed to. Charlie nods and then calls out again.
Charlie: Number 6!
The door slides shut behind the blonde man and Charlie nods to him.
Charlie: Ready?
The blonde man, Shonn Maguire, nods silently. Charlie nods in return and leads him back up the hallway to the checkpoint gate and Tommy. As they arrive, Charlie notices the usually rambunctious inmates have all gone quiet.
Charlie: We have an incident?
Tommy shakes his head.
Tommy: You called out his name and they all went…
He nods up the hallway.
Tommy: Like that.
Charlie just shakes his head.
Charlie: I think I liked them better all rowdy.
Tommy nods as he opens the gate. Charlie and Maguire step through and walk back up the hallway towards the main office, dead silence around them as they go. As they come up to the door, Charlie glances back at what Maguire is carrying and shakes his head.
Charlie: Is that really all ya got?
Maguire nods.
Shonn Maguire: It is.
Charlie chuckles.
Charlie: I’ve heard of traveling light, but you could fit pretty much everything you got in a jacket pocket!
Maguire nods.
Shonn Maguire: Thas the idea.
They come to the office door and it opens from the other side. Charlie nods inside and Maguire steps through the door. Waiting for him is the administrator, Colin McLoughlin.
Colin McLoughlin: Seán Michael John Maguire…
He nods and then smiles.
Colin McLoughlin: Paperwork’s taken care of. No strings, just like you asked…
Maguire nods.
Shonn Maguire: Thankye.
McLoughlin looks down at the forms in front of him and shakes his head.
Colin McLoughlin: Your father’s still not ecstatic about this at all.
For the first time, Maguire almost laughs.
Shonn Maguire: There be a la of things me Da is no ‘appy ‘bout.
McLoughlin nods to the picture in Maguire’s hands.
Colin McLoughlin: Is she still one of them?
Maguire flashes a switchblade smile.
Shonn Maguire: Aye, she is.
McLoughlin nods.
Colin McLoughlin: And the other?
Maguire nods again.
Shonn Maguire: Aye, him too.
McLoughlin shakes his head in disbelief.
Colin McLoughlin: You’re going out there, aren’t you?
Maguire nods.
Shonn Maguire: Aye, an’ ye kin tell me Da I’ll be in touch when I get there.
McLoughlin shakes his head as he signs the papers before him.
Colin McLoughlin: You’re playin’ with fire, Shonn.
Maguire shrugs.
Shonn Maguire: Ye say tha like it’s a new thin…
McLoughlin nods and then extends a hand.
Colin McLoughlin: Good luck to ya, Shonn.
Maguire accepts the hand and shakes.
Shonn Maguire: Thankye.
The door opens and Maguire is handed back his leather jacket. He puts it on, placing his letters and picture inside the right side pocket. Nodding one last time, he turns and walks out into the free air, the familiar visage of Pauly O’Connor waiting for him. Maguire nods, walking over to one of his best friends in the world and embracing him for the first time in four years. They step into the black rental car and drive off into the night, the first step towards the UWA and a reunion that desperately needed to happen.

Shonn Maguire stands in the parking lot of a hotel in California, his red Ducati bike sitting there just begging for him to jump on and ride somewhere. He nods to it and stretches.
Shonn Maguire: Aye, you’ll have to excuse me a bit, I havna been able tae ride all over fer a while. Still gettin’ used tae the’ feelin’.
He nods again for a second as he breathes in the fresh air around him.
Shonn Maguire: I suppose I should be thrilled ye got me name right considerin’ I’ve nae been here before nor ‘ave I done ennithin tae grab attention. As ye said, me name is Shonn Maguire, an’ aye, Pauly and Aerynn are me best friends in the world.
He pauses for a second, smiling at the thought.
Shonn Maguire: I dinna say whot I went away fer an’ ye seem tae have some o’ the’ facts, albeit all twisted. I kinna argue wit some of whot yer sayin’.
He nods acknowledgingly.
Shonn Maguire: Aye, Lass, ye be right. Me friends don’t mean ennithin when it comes to me. I’m nae Pauly an’ I’m nae Aerynn either. I came here tae help them and mebbe have a li’l fun meself, but this is me first match an’ I havna proven ennithin yet.
A smile crosses his face.
Shonn Maguire: The Joker bit was a nice touch...
He nods as he recalls Lacey Roberts laughing.
Shonn Maguire: I kinna tell ye how meny times I’ve heard laughter like tha. Some of me Da’s friends did it, some of the guys I met in prison did it too, it usually didna mean much other than they had nae idea whot else tae do…
He cocks his head to the left thoughtfully, carefully considering everything before him.
Shonn Maguire: But in yer case, I think ye do know whot yer doin’. Ye wanted attention, an’ ye went and took it by smacking th’ smile off tha silly girl, Amy an’ I think ye’d do it again in a heartbeat. Me, I kinna tell ye of eny former glory, cause I donna have eny to tell. but i can tellye this…
The smile turns sick as he seemingly shrugs it all off.
Shonn Maguire: Ye definitely look like a fun lass to play wit, an’ I love a good time!
