Sitting in the main room of her New Orleans home, Bethany Kenyon scratches her chin as she waits for phone calls from the people closest to her in this world. As she sits back, looking moderately disappointed, her phone goes off, signaling an incoming text message.
“Knocking in 3… 2…”
Just as the message had forewarned, a knock comes on her door. Bethany gets up and walks to the door, glancing out the window where she sees Nikki Peltier standing there looking nervous. Bethany opens the door and nods.
Bethany Kenyon: So?
Nikki shakes her head.
Nikki Peltier: She didn’t answer.
Bethany sighs heavily.
Bethany Kenyon: Damn… ok…
Nikki nods her agreement with this assessment.
Nikki Peltier: So, cabin or house?
Bethany taps her fingers on the door for a second and then nods as she makes her decision.
Bethany Kenyon: I’ll try the cabin, you try her house. I’ll text you when I get there.
Nikki nods again.
Nikki Peltier: Ok.
Nikki hugs Bethany and then turns back to her own vehicle. Bethany grabs her keys off the side table before heading out to her own vehicle. She watches as Nikki drives off in her more or less brand new 2014 Stingray Corvette that Jeszika had helped her pick out right down to the “gun metal” color. As soon as Nikki’s car vanishes, Bethany steps into her black and silver two-toned 1994 Ford Explorer inherited from her mother, and cranks it up.
Bethany Kenyon: Dammit, Jezzy, what are you doing?
She puts the vehicle into gear and drives off, making sure her voice-activated communications array is turned on. This had been a gift from Nikki, who seemingly LOVED playing with all the latest gadgets and making sure they all had their cars outfitted with them even if they looked horribly out of place because the cars were older or had no business housing such gleaming new electronic. Both Bethany and Ashley had started to object concerning the refitting of their vehicles, Ashley, because she didn’t want to not have her Trans-Am for a week, Bethany, because she was reluctant to do anything to what had been her mother’s car. In the end, Nikki had persuaded both of them that she could handle their “babies” with care and had installed stuff neither Kenyon sister had ever heard of before their techie friend started playing with their rides. Now, as she rolls down the street, Bethany decides to give the voice activated hands free stuff a shot.
Bethany Kenyon: Text Aerynn…
The computer gives her the proper audio notification that it’s ready.
Bethany Kenyon: No, delete text…
The computer does as she asks as she fades back into silence. She pauses, contemplating what to do.
Bethany Kenyon: God, what should I do? She told me to stop trying but, I can’t. She’s my friend…
She shakes her head as she turns away from town.
Bethany Kenyon: Please don’t be laying on the floor when I get here, Jezzy. Please don’t be so blind drunk you can’t see me… please don’t…
Biting her bottom lip, Bethany drives into the darkness. This was never her favorite part of the drive to the cabin simply because of the lack of much of anything out here along with the increased chances of literally running into wildlife. You never know what might be lurking in the bushes when you start into the bayou country. Bethany turns another corner and starts to pull up into the area of Jeszika’s cabin.
Bethany Kenyon: God help me, please don’t be too far gone, Jezzy!
She pulls up and sees no lights or vehicles of any kind. Putting her vehicle in park, she nods to herself and then looks at her voice activated stuff again.
Bethany Kenyon: Text Nikki.
The computer makes it’s telltale sound of approval.
Bethany Kenyon: I’m at the cabin. Is she there with you?
She pauses and then nods.
Bethany Kenyon: Send.
The computer does as instructed and Bethany sits there thinking.
Bethany Kenyon: Text Ashley.
The computer again signals its approval.
Bethany Kenyon: Hey Sis, is Billy there yet? How are you?
She pauses and then nods again.
Bethany Kenyon: Send.
The computer does as it’s told and then signals an answer. She looks at the screen and reads off.
Bethany Kenyon: She’s here, she says she’ll try…
Bethany exhales in relief.
Bethany Kenyon: Thank God!
She swallows and then nods.
Bethany Kenyon: Text Nikki.
The computer chimes happily.
Bethany Kenyon: Ok, I’ll be home in fifteen.
She pauses, wondering momentarily if she should ask if she needs to come over there too but then thinks better of it and shakes her head.
Bethany Kenyon: Send.
The computer again chimes happily before announcing another answer, this time from Ashley. Bethany nods and looks at the screen to read it.
Bethany Kenyon: Everything’s cool. I’ll be home in a day or two. Love you.
Bethany smiles and nods.
Bethany Kenyon: Text Ashley.
The computer cheerily beeps.
Bethany Kenyon: Ok, see ya then. Love you.
She exhales in relief again and then nods.
Bethany Kenyon: Send.
The computer beeps again and she puts her car back into gear for the drive back home. It was good hearing that Jeszika wasn’t dead on the floor in front of her and that her sister was happily snuggling up to her boyfriend in Sacramento. maybe he really had managed to go straight after all. She starts back home and enjoys some old New Orleans jazz on the ride back, allowing herself to be soothed by the sweet sounds of horns playing along to nothing in particular.
A week later, Bethany and Ashley are both sitting in Nikki’s living room as Nikki putters around on her computer in the next room.
Ashley Kenyon: So, is Jezzy coming?
Bethany shrugs knowing the truth is probably way more complicated than a straight yes or no answer.
Bethany Kenyon: Probably.
Ashley frowns, looking almost bitter.
Ashley Kenyon: Probably? You mean we’re planning for the biggest matches of our lives and she might not fucking show up?
Bethany shrugs again, trying not to make the situation any worse.
Bethany Kenyon: She’s got a few…
Ashley is having none of this.
Ashley Kenyon: She’s having a few… what? Issues?
Bethany searches for the words but can’t seem to find the right ones.
Ashley Kenyon: What could she possibly have added to her plate in the last few days that wasn’t already there to begin with?
She stares at her older sister expectantly but Bethany still can’t find the right answer.
Ashley Kenyon: Her girlfriend leave her?
She starts to nod and then shakes her head.
Ashley Kenyon: Oh, no wait, that happened a while ago!
Bethany can’t believe her ears but this is lost on Ashley.
Ashley Kenyon: Did a friend stab her in the back?
Before Bethany can stop her, Ashley shakes her head again.
Ashley Kenyon: Oh, no wait, that happened a while ago too!
Bethany’s eyes go wide on shock.
Ashley Kenyon: Did she get attacked by douchebags who swear up and down they deserve stuff only to find when you look up their stats that in all honesty, they’re lucky to be employed at all?
Again, she stares at her sister expectantly.
Ashley Kenyon: Oh wait, that was you, me and Nikki…
Ashley shakes her head, her anger seemingly rising up out of nowhere.
Ashley Kenyon: Did she get beat by a big guy on the last show and then attacked three on one by said old friend who betrayed her?
As Bethany stares at her, Ashley shakes her head again with obvious bitterness in her eyes.
Ashley Kenyon: Oh wait, that was me...
Bethany stares at her sister, finally finding her voice.
Bethany Kenyon: Ash, what’s going on?
Ashley shakes her head dismissively.
Ashley Kenyon: Nothing…
Bethany sits forward on the couch, worry written all over her face.
Bethany Kenyon: Ash, it’s not nothing…
Ashley starts to retort but this time it’s Bethany who moves too quickly.
Bethany Kenyon: You haven’t been…
Ashley stares at her sister, wanting to scream bloody murder but the look in Bethany’s eyes disarms her right there.
Ashley Kenyon: Since I came home from Sacramento?
Bethany nods.
Bethany Kenyon: Yeah…
Ashley crosses her arms, the bitter beer face suddenly back out of nowhere.
Ashley Kenyon: And now we’re on the cusp of a big match, biggest we’ve ever had and you think you can’t trust me because my head’s not in the game, is that it?
Bethany shakes her head.
Bethany Kenyon: No, I…
Ashley glares back, her arms flying back down to her sides as she leans forward accusingly on the chair.
Ashley Kenyon: So you DON’T think you can trust me against the Sin City Knights!
Bethany gasps.
Bethany Kenyon: Ash…
Ashley fires up to her feet.
Ashley Kenyon: What, you don’t think I notice?
Bethany cocks her head, unable to believe this is really happening.
Bethany Kenyon: Ash!
Ashley nods, her eyes moistening more than they should be over this.
Ashley Kenyon: I know you guys…
The look in Ashley’s eyes is not lost on Bethany as she stands up.
Bethany Kenyon: ASH!!!
taken aback, ashley almost loses her footing.
Ashley Kenyon: What?
Bethany takes a deep breath.
Bethany Kenyon: What happened in Sacramento?
Ashley shakes her head.
Ashley Kenyon: Oh nothing, I just lost a big match and then got attacked by somebody we used to call friend… no biggie, right?
Bethany stands her ground.
Bethany Kenyon: That’s not what i mean, and you know it.
Ashley almost laughs even though her eyes are not telling that story at all.
Ashley Kenyon: I went to the hospital, got checked out…
Bethany nods, knowing there has to be more coming.
Bethany Kenyon: After that…
Ashley shrugs, the anger fading off her face.
Ashley Kenyon: You and Nikki came back to make sure Jezzy didn’t drink herself to death in her rage.
Bethany frowns pointedly, almost motherly.
Bethany Kenyon: Ash…
Ashley takes a step back at this.
Ashley Kenyon: What? It’s what happened…
Bethany nods again.
Bethany Kenyon: Nothing else?
Ashley starts to fire back but can’t find it. Her head droops, defeated.
Ashley Kenyon: Then I lied to you...
Bethany frowns again, this time more worriedly than in annoyance.
Bethany Kenyon: About what?
Ashley sucks in a deep breath.
Ashley Kenyon: Billy never came to Sacramento. I talked to him on the phone and he made excuses for why he couldn’t come up. I could hear it in his voice, Bethy…
Bethany’s eyes close almost all on their own.
Bethany Kenyon: He was too busy getting high again...
Ashley nods sadly.
Ashley Kenyon: I didn’t wanna party… not this week…
Bethany manages a smile. For her sister to admit that was something of a triumph, however, the smile fades as she watches her baby sister get to the verge of tears.
Bethany Kenyon: And he knew that, didn’t he?
Ashley nods.
Ashley Kenyon: Yes…
Bethany shakes her head and quickly moves in to hug her sister. Ashley bursts into tears as her sister tries to comfort her.
Ashley Kenyon: I’m sorry, I didn’t want to…
Bethany just cradles her sister’s head.
Bethany Kenyon: Ssssh, it's ok…
As the two stand there, nikki suddenly comes running into the room.
Nikki Peltier: Guys, have you seen this?
She flips on the television and ports over a video from the internet. As the video plays, Bethany and Ashley are both caught off-guard by what they see.
Bethany Kenyon: Is that…
Ashley frowns.
Ashley Kenyon: Holy shit, that looks like…
A look of terrified horror comes over Ashley’s face.
Ashley Kenyon: Billy?
Bethany’s eyes go wide shock as well.
Bethany Kenyon: And... Brody?
Ashley watches and her hand flies up to cover her mouth.
Ashley Kenyon: Oh my God...
The video ends and Nikki turns off the television.
Ashley Kenyon: What… why?
She shakes her head.
Ashley Kenyon: Why would he do that? Why would EITHER of them do that?
Bethany hugs Ashley again.
Bethany Kenyon: I’m sure they’ll both tell us when they’re ready.
Nikki nods and then starts for the next room.
Nikki Peltier: I’m gonna text Jezzy, make sure she’s not going off on the warpath…
Bethany nods as she hugs her now sobbing sister.
Bethany Kenyon: It’s gonna be ok, Ash. We’ll get through this together…
A few hours later, Bethany sits in front of her laptop and turns on the webcam.
Bethany Kenyon: This has been an interesting few weeks, hasn’t it?
She inhales deeply and then blows it out forcefully.
Bethany Kenyon: Ragnarok, I think, has people in an interesting dilemma in that, by all rights, none of them “deserve” much of anything and yet, Kyle Travis has all but talked them into a position to get at least one and maybe more. You take his little buddies in Sang Réal and if you look at how they’ve done here, demanding to know why the current champions aren’t accepting the “challenge” is ludicrous bordering on a certain word that would probably get people in trouble for using it now when describing mental acuity.
She raises her hand to the camera to stop the protests that are obviously going to be coming her way.
Bethany Kenyon: Sang Réal aren’t a challenge, how can that be? Well, it’s quite simple Mister “Paper Champions,” and you should really stop using that term since the only person who has ever been a champion in this company that truly fits that description is you! But how can I say Sang Réal don’t deserve anything?
She nods knowingly, as if she can hear the answer being screamed back at her.
Bethany Kenyon: Simply because the current champions, Silver Baron and Quentin Sharpe, have wrestled two matches ever, winning both of them, which means they’ve won twice as many matches as Sang Réal has here. Don’t believe me?
She punches up onto the screen a list of matches.
9/8/14 L vs KISS for title shot
6/29/14 L vs Cornbread Mafia in Steel Cage
6/2/14 L vs Arsenal 6-man with Craven
4/20/14 L vs. Cornbread Mafia
2/23/14 W vs. Cornbread Mafia
2/10/14 L vs KISS
Bethany Kenyon: As you can see in this graphic, Sang Réal have had six matches as a pair in UWA and have lost all but one of them and that one win came after they blatantly cheated. Since then they’ve lost to that team twice, they’ve lost to me and Ashley three times and bitched and whined about not getting opportunities and yet, still had a match where if they’d won, they would be fighting for the titles on Monday instead of us. You don’t deserve a damn thing and at the rate you’re going, you never will.
She pauses and then raises a finger as if a new answer has been shouted at her.
Bethany Kenyon: But wait, how can I say Kyle Travis was a paper champion?
She shrugs.
Bethany Kenyon: Well, how about we look at how he got his initial championship opportunity here in UWA. There were qualifying matches for the North American Championship, just as there had been for the World Championship. Kyle here, was never in one and was simply handed a spot in the championship match by the very man he is now claiming is holding him down in our distinguished owner. Later he was able to gain a match with the World Champion for her title and yet, he got it the same way Ashley is getting her opportunity at Vince Jones, by losing to the champion in a non-title match first.
She nods and calls up another graphic.
4-6-1 9/22/14 vs Pauly
4-5-1 7/28/14 w vs Joshua Arsenal run-in
3-5-1 7/14/14 L vs Aerynn for World Title
3-4-1 6/29/14 L for NA title vs Fraser/Vince
3-3-1 6/16/14 L vs Baron non title
3-2-1 6/2/14 L vs Aerynn non title
3-1-1 5/19/14 W vs Stalker title defense
2-1-1 4/20/14 W for NA title vs Jez/Garbage Man
1-1-1 4/7/14 L vs Brody impress Georgio enters NA title
1-0-1 3/24/14 NC vs Jeszika
1-0-0 3/10/14 W vs Castiel
Bethany Kenyon: In fact, you actually have a losing record here, Mister Travis, and you’ve lost to both of the top singles champions already, in Aerynn’s case, more than once. By your own reckoning, you deserve absolutely nothing. If we go back to your time in NEW, which you are so fond of reminding us all of, we find you were a below .500 wrestler there as well with a record of 13-18. For all your talk about this great reputation, if one looks at the stats you’ve put up over the last few years, they would think you just under average and if they listened to some of the stuff you say…
She shakes her head, almost laughing.
Bethany Kenyon: they would think you belonged in a special home where they would keep you in a harness, helmet and gave you sippy cups to play with because you seem to be unable to grasp even basic concepts like…
She shrugs playfully.
Bethany Kenyon: Ashley did not defeat Vince Jones. She lost and has admitted such no matter how many times you talk about her getting a title shot because she beat him. Your problem, Kyle, is that you seem to think certain things are common knowledge when they are not and you also seem to think that whoever you might have been years ago, that you are both still that guy and also that you are perceived to be that guy when you have clearly proven that is not the case.
She sighs heavily, obviously tired of having to talk about this man.
Bethany Kenyon: The Sin City Knights earned their spot in that match by defeating us and by defeating Dark Camelot the same way the Cornbread Mafia earned their spot by defeating your two little bitchboys. The fact that there are five people who operate as the Sin City Knights does not detract from the fact that the team earned that spot and when push came to shove, they won the championships.
She nods, taking down both of the previous graphics.
Bethany Kenyon: Which brings me to who I should have been talking about this whole time, the Silver Baron and Quentin Sharpe, the World Tag Team Champions. I don’t have any shiny graphics for you guys because, frankly, I respect you too much to start nitpicking anything you’ve had to say the way I would anything that comes flying out of Captain Special Snowflake’s mouth. You two might be as dysfunctional a pair as Baron and Fraser Freemen were outside the ring, but inside it, all that seems to get put aside and you guys rise to the occasion like no one else here can say with the possible exception of my sister and I and now, we get to see which team can truly lay claim to that title.
She pauses, and then shrugs, almost laughing.
Bethany Kenyon: Truthfully, I have no idea what you guys did before UWA and I really don’t care because it really doesn’t matter. Since coming to UWA, the both of you have been a case study in, “What the FUCK?” considering Baron starting under strain that really wasn’t there and Razor there came in under a mask for really no reason at all and then threw it away for no real reason either. Now Baron’s supposedly whole again and Razor is Razor instead of a mysterious masked man and yet, I have to admit, despite not only being on the same page, but seemingly not even being in the same book series, you two have made it work where no one else thought you could and no one else really could have. You’ve done things everybody else thought was impossible and you should be commended for that…
She takes a deep breath, nodding acknowledgingly.
Bethany Kenyon: The thing is, so have Ashley and I. When we first got here, everybody saw us as just another couple of hot chicks hanging out with Jeszika and that I was holding my baby sister back from being a bad ass solo star. Then we won a few matches and people started to see us as a team that would inevitably break-up and I would be the Marty Jannetty of the team.
Pausing again, she shakes her head as she glances off into the distance above the camera.
Bethany Kenyon: People said I couldn’t and wouldn’t last...
She nods, still looking into the distance.
Bethany Kenyon: Then they said we’d never be able to survive the onslaught of the Children of Nephilim and Joshua McBride…
She brings her gaze back down to the camera.
Bethany Kenyon: People were wrong! I’m still here and not only did we survive that onslaught, we kicked it’s fucking head clean off! Now it’s time to see what happens when the two teams people said would never work and would never last come together with gold on the line and boys, I can’t wait to get out there and steal the show!
