It was night time as Greg’s car crossed onto the Verrazano Bridge. There was always traffic in New York, but the later it was at night the easier it was to avoid the majority of people, which is what J-Shades was going for. That’s what he thought about as he sat in the passenger seat of the car and starred out at the New York City lights. So beautiful but just a little too much for Jay Right now.
Greg: You still haven’t really explained why you’re moving.
Jay: (Still choosing to look out the window) All our shows are on the West coast. It just makes sense for me to be over there.
Greg: No… That’s not it. You’ve been fine with the travel for months. This is different.
Jay: (Hesitating but finally saying) It’s too much here. Too distracting. I need to get out of here to focus more. My career is about to get so much brighter… I don’t need to being around the flashing lights of New York all the time.
Greg: A week ago you were talking about quitting! Now all of a sudden you’ve got this bright future?
Jay: That was before I knew anyone there actually appreciated me! I wasn’t even booked for a match last week but next Sunday Greg, they put me in a fatal four way match at Raising Hell… to become the very first ever UWA Television Champion! (He said with pride in his voice, putting an emphasis on every syllable to prove how important this was.)
Greg: (Shocked) A championship match!? (Jay nodded and gave a little “Uhm-hmm”) Really? Didn’t you lose your last like four matches?
Jay: Yea, but it’s not all about the wins, Greg. To be a champion you have to be resilient and have heart. The will to come back and keep fighting even after suffering loses.
Greg: Right… Resilience. I’m guessing you didn’t tell them about your plans on quitting?
Jay: Well, what they don’t know can’t hurt them. All I know is this is my chance to place myself in wrestling history! This company is getting bigger and bigger every week and now I have the chance to be one of it’s first champions…
this is the oportunity I've been waiting for.
Greg: You said Television champion right?
Jay: Yea, why?
Greg: I thought you said UWA doesn’t have a TV deal?
Jay: Minor details, man.
As Greg wondered how a wrestling company could have a Television Champion without being on television Jay returned to admiring the night lights. He had no intention of coming back anytime soon, so he wanted a good look. As he looked on he could only imagine the bright light that he knew he was about to become. He saw himself in the lights.
There wasn’t much talking for the rest of the ride to the airport. When they got there Greg helped J-Shades with the little luggage he had. Eventually they got to the gate where Greg could go no further.
Greg: You’re gonna miss this place, you know?
Jay: I know that. I mean, I grew up here! This has always been my home and nowhere else is gonna feel the same, but I have to do this. Being champion means I have to commit myself one hundred percent and I have no doubt in my mind that I’ll become champion Sunday as long as I stay focused. I can’t do that here.
Greg: Well I guess this is goodbye. (Greg extends his hand out)
Jay: (Shakes Greg‘s hand) Oh not at all. This is just the next chapter of my life, I’m sure you’ll be in more to come.
And with that J-Shades walked onto the plane and into his future.
