::There is a large bookshelf stand against a white wall. This is clearly a well stocked and well organized bookshelf, clearly owned by a family, but with a wide range of interests spread across the board. There are entire series of books, such as Harry Potter, Percy Jackson and its sequel series, The Heroes of Olympus, The Twilight Saga, The Prydain Chronicles, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy. There are books that have become part of popular culture like The Zombie Survival Guide and World War Z. There are historical classics like The Art of War, The Divine Comedy, Mein Kampf, The Communist Manifesto and Republic. There are religious tests like the Holy Bible, The Torah and the Qur`an. This is a clearly well stocked bookshelf and a family’s bookshelf.::
::Kyle Travis stands against the bookshelf. Dressed in a pair of black pants and a white shirt, “the Canadian Legend” is holding a closed copy of Webster’s dictionary in his right hand. He taps the paperback book against the palm of his right.::
“Something about you just told me if I did a promo from my trophy room, you would either accuse me of being arrogant for having it, or living in the past, or both. I am so happy you proved me right.”
::He doesn’t seem to be reading it or even looking through it. It is more like his is fiddling with something while he thinks.::
“Have you ever just completely blanked on a word before Aerynn?”
::Travis opens the dictionary and flips through the pages. His fingers slide over the pages as they are rapidly flipped.::
“I look at this match, our UWA World Championship match on Monday Night Mayhem and I feel like there is a word that describes it so perfectly, but, you know, I just can’t think of it.”
::He flips through the book again, running the pages back and forth as he just keeps flipping through them.::
“Part of me wants to say redemption is the word I want to use, but then another part of me is thinking that it’s not the right word for the situation. I think there is a better word than that, and I am fairly sure it starts with the prefix “re”, but I really don’t know what it is.”
“I have been racking my brain trying to think of the word and I honestly do not know if it is redemption, or if it is some other word. Then again, it could just be I am trying to think of a word that does not even exist. I am pretty sure that a vast majority of people out there have had a moment where they are trying to come up with a word and than totally forget what it is or if it even exists. And yet, I find myself rather hard pressed to find a better word that redemption to use to describe this match.”
::“The Canadian Legend” stops flipping the pages and actually opens the dictionary. He flips through a few pages. His finger slides over the page as he looks for a particular word.::
“Redemption, noun; one: an act of redeeming or the state of being redeemed, two: deliverance; rescue, three: salvation, atonement for guilt, four: repurchase, as of something sold.”
::Travis closes the dictionary.::
“I do not think that this match as anything to do with repurchase. And unless you actually did see Bene Elohim’s betrayal coming and didn’t warn Arsenal, then I fail to see why you need to atone for anything. I have committed too many vile actions to believe I can be redeemed or atone and I am not even going to try. I do not see a rescue coming in this match, unless Arsenal really does like you and it wasn’t just a business thing at Searing Agony. So that just leaves the act of redeeming or the state of being redeemed and that is the point of this match and it is the redemption we both seek.”
::Sliding the dictionary on to the shelf next to the Thesaurus, Travis turns away from the shelf, wagging his finger.::
“Oh, but of course Aerynn, you are the reigning UWA World Champion. You are the flagship, the standard bearer, the person sitting at the top of the mountain here in the Unchained Wrestling Alliance. Right now you are at the top of the world and the rest of us are looking up wanting to be you. What do you need redemption for?”
::A smirk slowly forms on the face of “the Once and Future King”.::
“Well, I suppose the whole thing with the Children of Nephilim is a good place to start looking for redemption. Despite whatever you may want to claim, I really doubt anyone is going to rush and defend how you have fought back against them. They steal your title and you threaten to quit. They continue their attack; you use a PI and backstage politics. Others have tried to fight your battle and were laid out. And you want us to believe you are a leader, someone we should rally around? They finally take Broderick Montgomery, and then you really decide to fight. And then, even then, when you finally decide to fight, when you step up and rally some forces, all of who are more concerned about Broderick’s safety than the company they work for, you still failed to win. Like I said Aerynn, you won a battle because Joshua McBride allowed you to win the battle, but in the end, he won. Since the day this started, you’ve been playing his game.”
::He stops smirking.::
“You need a win Aerynn. Not one that is handed to you as part of a larger game, but an actual victory. You need it Aerynn and you know you need it. You need to show everyone that you are the world champion you want every single one of us to believe that you are. You want to show the world exactly why you are the first ever UWA World Heavyweight Champion.”
“Deep down, you know your war is not over. Deep down, you know that the Children of Nephilim are coming for you. Maybe it is because you are UWA Champion or maybe they just would have gone after whoever won the title in the first place. Either way, you and Arsenal, or at least Jeszika are the only people who care about Broderick’s fate, and she only cares because she suddenly feels guilty about coming off as a manipulative bitch in front of a world wide audience. Guilt is not a motivator. Guilt does not make a monster. If I enter this fight, they can have him for all I care. If I enter this fight, it is about the UWA, and not about some spoiled rich kid.”
“Your redemption is the victory. You know another battle with them is coming. It may not be at this Mayhem or the next. It may not be until the next pay-per-view or it may be before then. It is coming. You know it is coming. And you know you need the momentum.”
“Nearly four weeks ago, Fraser Freeman pulled off a huge upset against you and beat you in the middle of the ring. Even before that, you lost to a member of Dark Camelot. You know you need this win. You know you need the redemption.”
“Now obviously, you do not want to admit it. You do not want to even for a second entertain the possibility that I may indeed be on to something, but you know that you need a win. No matter who the champion is, or how great they are, their reign always comes to an end. Right now, you probably don’t want yours to end. You don’t want anyone out there to think you are weak or vulnerable. You need this. You win and you are, at least for a while, redeemed in the eyes of the fans.”
::For a moment, “the Canadian Legend” allows himself a smirk.::
“Why do I feel I need redemption?”
::He spreads his arms, turning in a small circle to show himself off. Once he makes a complete circle, he turns from side to side, gesturing to himself. He then claps his hands together.::
“As I have said, I am a monster. I have done a lot of terrible things in my career and I am not going to be forgiven any time soon. I am not looking for forgiveness. My redemption is not about salvation or rescue or repurchase. It is about being redeemed, just like you.”
“Over a month ago, you beat me in the first ever champion versus champion match in UWA history. I am not going to make excuses about how or why I lost the match. You won.”
“I admit I said many hurtful things about you in the weeks leading up to our first encounter. The things I said, however, are still things I believe to be true and Searing Agony did nothing to disprove that.”
“I told you the Children would win because they have belief. I told you the reasons you and Arsenal are fighting for are not reasons anyone here will ever rally around. As I have said before, and will say again, you only won at Searing Agony because you were allowed to. You are the champion we have, not the one we need or deserve.”
“The time has come for a change. The time has come for someone who can lead the UWA to where it should be. That person is not someone who acts like she is tough, and yet threatened to walk away when things did not go her way. In that one moment, that one declaration you proved to Joshua McBride and the entire world that you cannot rise to meet the challenge he presented. Searing Agony confirmed it. You told me you fought with a PI and backstage politics. Only a coward, so insecure in their own position or so threatened by someone else fights battles like that.”
“Let me play my “I’ve been in this business a while so I can drop names and tell stories card” and actually drop a name and tell a story.”
“I was in some small indy company at the time and I was doing pretty well there. I had already held their main mid-card title, the Can-Am Championship and had been a Tag Team Champion with their world champion Jango Cross when the company changed owners. Now, at the time, one of my best friends in the business was Johnny Rampage. He gets a hold of me and tells me he’s joined the League of American Wrestlers and he says there is a place for me there. What he did not tell me was that Red Hot Rob Taylor was there.”
::Travis exhales through his nose, almost like a bull does. As he speaks, his tone sounds angry and hateful. His hands clench into fists.::
“To put it mildly, Rob and I hate each other. I could be the world champion on a historic run and if UWA signs Taylor, I am out that door before the ink on that son of a bitch’s contract dries. Rob is the kind of man who once threatened to close down his own company, as much of a joke as it was, because I disagreed with his need to shameless promote himself. He is the kind of person who wrestles for the world title in the company he owns on the night his own daughter is dying in a hospital. He is the kind of person who complains if the company does not revolve around him. He is the kind of person who believes wrestling was only invented because the ancients anticipated he would be born and would grace the ring with his sheer magnificence. He is the kind of person who has retired more times than I can count, but always finds an excuse to return. He is the type of person who uses hired help to win a match and yet acts like he has won everything on his own. He honestly believes he is the basis of the phrase “women want him and men want to be him” and we are all here to bask in his sheer glory. Rob Taylor is the kind of person who feels he should be handed every title without ever having to win them just because he is Rob Taylor. If I had the chance, I would slaughter his family and use it as an entrance video!”
“And yet, as big a piece of crap Rob is, as huge of a rampaging ego maniac who has shut down or ruined companies with his crap as Taylor is, people in power listen to him.”
::His fists start to shake as he speaks.::
“For the weeks leading up to my debut in the LAW, Rob was in the ear of management, poisoning them against me so that the minute I walked in, I could do no right. If anything went wrong, I was blamed. If anything didn’t go as planned, I was blamed. If there was even the slightest reason to terminate my employment, then oh you better believe I was fired, and yet I was almost immediately rehired. I beat the two best that company had and it still wasn’t good enough. Nothing I ever did was good enough. Every time I made it up that ladder, I got my finger on brass ring and then had to go back to start. For me, it was two steps forward, thrown back down the stairs and go back to start back. For five years I was the whipping boy of the UWA and all of it was thanks to Rob Taylor whispering in the ear of management and pulling his backstage politics crap.”
::Travis grimaces a bit as opens his hands, stretching his fingers out. He did not draw blood, but came close. He takes a deep breath in through his nose and then exhales the same way. His voice still sounds a bit tense with that anger and hatred.::
“That, Aerynn, is why I have no respect for you as a wrestler or a champion. Every battle I have waged, every rivalry I have ever been involved in, and every terrible thing I have ever done, I have met my opponent face-to-face, or in some cases, face-to-back. I have never tried to fight someone using backstage politics like a coward or threatening to quit like a child taking his ball and going home. That is not a champion. That is why no one is rallying to follow you against the Children.”
“You are not evolved; you’re just Rob Taylor with tits and an Irish accent. I have seen your type again and again. You are that person who tastes glory and suddenly you can do no wrong. Suddenly, you are the greatest of all time. That is not evolution, it’s a remake, and not even a very good one.”
“That UWA Championship should mean something. I am not so arrogant as to say I can take it to heights that you can not, but I am confident that ANYONE on the roster could make a better and more deserving champion than you.”
::It is clear that Travis is trying to keep himself calm, trying to maintain that cold predatory nature he tries to project, but it is clearly a difficult task at the moment.::
“You can stand there and tell us all that you won a great victory, and that Joshua looked upset when his priestess was pinned, that’s fine. But we all watched the match. His army followed his orders. Yes, you fought, but your win came because he allowed it. While Bethany hand her hand raised in victory, it was the Children standing tall at the end of the night. They won.”
“And you want to tell everyone you thought there was something suspicious about Bene Elohim, but you did nothing about it and did not warn Jeszika or K.I.S.S.? And you wonder why I question you ability to lead? But I guess your next promo will show footage of you and K.I.S.S. discussing that team and how you all expect their sudden but inevitable betrayal so you look good as opposed to how it looked to the entire world when they completely took Bethany by surprise.”
“You are not fighting for the UWA! Neither you nor Arsenal is fighting for the UWA! You are fighting because a cult of psychopaths abducted your sugar daddy and it impacts your bank account! Prior to that, you were oh so content to allow them to do whatever they wanted or break whoever tried to stand against them while you pouted and demanded your title back or you’d quit or try to get them fired by pulling backstage politics crap. Where were you when Sentinel or Blood were standing up to them? They laid them out and you were no where to be found.”
“Explain to me exactly how you are evolved? Explain to me how you are some sort of apex predator? Because when I look at you, all I see is the little mouse hoping the comet comes quickly so it may have a shot at evolving to something other than the bottom of the food chain.”
“Nature has one rule when it comes to evolution Aerynn and it is survival of the fittest. Only the strongest or the swiftest or the smartest survive and sometimes, evolution just hits a dead end. You are that dead end.”
::As he starts to spread and stretch the fingers of his left hand, his voice returns to normal. His fingers stretch out, closing in on themselves and stretching out again.::
“I know I can beat you Aerynn. I know I can beat you. I know I can be UWA World Champion and I am going to prove it at Mayhem.”
“I was not pinned and I never tapped out to lose the North American Championship, regardless of that though, I am still no longer UWA North American Champion. And to make it worse, I lost it in a triple threat match. It has been about half a decade since the last time I was in a triple threat match and my hand was NOT raised in victory. Both those things bother me, but I will give credit to where credit is due and Vince Jones did what few have ever been able to.”
::He smirks and chuckles a bit, but the smirk quickly fades away.::
“It has been far too long since I held a world title. It has been far too long since I had an actual opportunity to become a world champion. Time and time again, I keep hearing people telling me that everything I have done in the past does not matter. Again and again I am told that I need to do something in the present, yet every time I do, it never seems to matter or be counted. Constantly I am told that my time is up or that I’m all washed up. Despite everything I do, everything I have done, I am either treated as a rookie just demanding a championship on the basis of just having shown up or underestimated and counted out. I have worked too long and too hard to just be cast aside or ignored.”
“I walked in here and I declared that I would become UWA World Heavyweight Champion. My first night here, I stated to everyone watching that I would take that title. It was not some rookie coming out and demanding a title because he showed up and feels he should get it just on the basis of showing up. It was not be pulling a Rob Taylor and believing I should be given the title because I am me. It was not some declaration to get attention. It was not a threat. It was a promise. I will become the UWA World Heavyweight Champion because I am “the Canadian Legend”, “the Once and Future King” and I am that damn good at what I do to take it.”
::Travis closes his left hand in to a fist and brings it up. He opens it again, styretching out the fingers and then closes it into a fist before lowering his hand.::
“Monday Night Mayhem, when I beat you and take the UWA World Heavyweight Championship, when I raise that title high into the air, and I am announced as the new champion, and “the Once and Future King” reclaims his throne, then THAT will be my redemption!”
::Moving his hands to his waist, Travis slowly cups them into somewhat claw-like shapes.::
“You want evolution Aerynn? You will get to see first hand how I evolve from where I am now to UWA World Champion. I will reclaim my throne. I will have my redemption, and I will evolve, at the expense of a lower species. Challenge and learn Aerynn.”
::Travis slowly moves his hands away from each other making the championship gesture as the scene fades to black.::
::Kyle Travis stands against the bookshelf. Dressed in a pair of black pants and a white shirt, “the Canadian Legend” is holding a closed copy of Webster’s dictionary in his right hand. He taps the paperback book against the palm of his right.::
