Waking up in the back room apartment of Prey, Bethany Kenyon is shocked to find her sister Ashley sitting in a chair opposite the bed. Bethany looks around in confusion a she sits up, her t-shirt falling to cover her perfectly. Picking up on her big sister’s confusion, Ashley nods.
Ashley Kenyon: Carrie got up fifteen minutes ago, she’s in the shower.
Bethany nods slowly, trying to stretch her sleepiness out.
Bethany Kenyon: What about you?
Ashley shrugs.
Ashley Kenyon: I was in the other room for a good hour before that.
Bethany nods.
Bethany Kenyon: Y’all have a fight?
Ashley shrugs.
Ashley Kenyon: I don’t know if you’d call it a fight really. There was no physicality, not much yelling either. It was just…
Bethany frowns.
Bethany Kenyon: Just… what?
Ashley clears her throat.
Ashley Kenyon: I told him about not getting fucked up anymore, right? He seemed ok with it. We made out some, went back to his room, messed around some and then he wanted to bring some… stuff… into play.
Blinking hard, Bethany yawns before her sister’s words find their mark. She rubs her eyes and then stares lasers through Ashley, skeptical of what she’s about to hear about.
Bethany Kenyon: What kind of stuff?
Ashley cocks her head, shooting her older sister a “you can’t be that stupid” look.
Ashley Kenyon: It’s Billy, what kind of stuff do you think he wanted to play with?
Bethany nods slowly, almost apologetically.
Bethany Kenyon: And you…
Ashley shakes her head. Bethany frowns at this. What had happened?
Bethany Kenyon: Then… ?
Ashley shrugs sadly.
Ashley Kenyon: he did some anyway, asked me if I wanted some and when I said I didn’t…
As Ashley trails off, Bethany suddenly looks worried.
Bethany Kenyon: He hit you?
Ashley shakes her head.
Ashley Kenyon: God no, I’d be in jail right now!
Bethany nods knowingly. Ashley probably would be in jail if Billy had tried to assault her over drugs. There was no telling what she would have done if he’d come at her but for sure, it would not have been good for Billy.
Bethany Kenyon: Ok, so… what, then?
Ashley takes a deep breath. Whatever had happened, it was obviously messing with her badly.
Ashley Kenyon: He just looked at me…
She rails off for a second as if she can’t quite believe what she’s saying.
Ashley Kenyon: And then he walked out and left me there.
Shaking her head in disbelief, tears start to well up in Ashley’s eyes.
Ashley Kenyon: I don’t know what this means, Bethy. Does this mean he just left me? Did he just pick… over me?
Bethany throws the sheet off and runs over to her sister, quickly taking the younger Kenyon into her arms.
Bethany Kenyon: It means he doesn’t know what to do, Baby Girl. He wasn’t ready for the paradigm shift and definitely wasn’t ready for you to go cold turkey on him.
Ashley shakes her head.
Ashley Kenyon: But I…
Bethany nods understandingly.
Bethany Kenyon: I know, there was nothing for you to go cold turkey on but to him, this was a suddenly change. you went from being up to shooting heroin to not even wanting a beer with the man. Now i know, I did the same to Carrie and so did Jezzy and Nikki but you have to look at the situation. Jezzy’s girl never liked to party so there was no major shift in their relationship because they never partied together. Nikki and Richie only ever have the occasional beer together so there was no major shift there. The only ones we were asking to really respect a big change were Carrie and Billy and that was gonna be a bigger deal to Billy because he’s never not loaded while Carrie can do things without it.
Ashley nods slowly.
Ashley Kenyon: He’s gonna come back… right?
Bethany bites her bottom lip.
Bethany Kenyon: I don’t know, Ash. I don’t know how he’s gonna react to all of this.
Ashley nods slowly again.
Ashley Kenyon: I can wait…
Bethany smiles and hugs her again.
Bethany Kenyon: I know you can…
Just then, Carrie comes walking in from the shower.
Carrie Winter: What’s going on?
Bethany looks up and nods to her sister.
Bethany Kenyon: Billy.
Carrie nods understandingly.
Carrie Winter: Didn’t take it well, did he?
Ashley shakes her head sadly and Carrie nods again.
Carrie Winter: Come on, Ash… I’ll make ya some coffee while your sister gets dressed…
Bethany grins.
Bethany Kenyon: Is that an order, Captain?
Carrie nods and Bethany salutes her. Carrie walks over and kisses her as Ashley separates herself and moves towards the door.
Carrie Winter: Sir, huh?
Bethany shrugs.
Bethany Kenyon: This even call Janeway that, didn’t they?
Carrie chuckles.
Carrie Winter: Usually they just called her captain.
Bethany nods.
Bethany Kenyon: Then I got it right!
Carrie grins and kisses her again.
Carrie Winter: See ya in a few minutes then?
Bethany nods and Carrie escorts Ashley out to the bar area. A few minutes later, Bethany walks into the next room and fires up the laptop webcam.
Bethany Kenyon: Skylar, Amy… I want to be able to say I’m looking forward to this match and seeing what all of us can do. It’s what we’re all here for and honestly it’s what we should expect every time we go out to that ring. It’s what this is supposed to be all about, three competitors getting into the ring and throwing all prejudices and preconceived notions out the window as they compete to see whose skill level is best on that particular night.
She pauses and shakes her head ever so slightly in aggravation.
Bethany Kenyon: I want to be able to just say Skylar is a woman with intense dedication to survival. That woman has been through hell and somehow managed to come out still breathing and for that, she should be commended no matter how she got there. Sometimes people have to do things they regret or feel ashamed of to make it through this life and when they make it through to the other side, we shouldn’t hold those things against them. Skylar Hansen is a true test just because you know she won’t just quit, roll over and die. She’s been through too much and fought too hard for too long to just let that happen.
Pausing again, bethany takes a deep breath and nods ever so slightly a second time.
Bethany Kenyon: And I want to be able to look at Amy Zing and be truly excited that somebody like her is here. You can just see she’s had to work twice as hard as everyone else because of her size and that her kicks and speed have to be lethal weapons for her to even be standing at the table, much less to be served the way everyone else wants to be. that little dynamo is a machine waiting to chop her way through all the bullshit, especially from the guys who are two and three times her size that will just dismiss her because she’s tiny, she’s a woman and they aren’t getting any from her.
She nods slowly, knowingly.
Bethany Kenyon: Yeah, I wanna be able to say this is gonna be an epic struggle, a great three chord song that could turn into an operatic symphony of greatness with all three of us playing our instruments like virtuosos…
She shakes her head looking somewhere between horribly sad and exceptionally angry.
Bethany Kenyon: But I know better because you won’t let that happen, will you Joshua? you won’t let that song get sung because it does nothing for you and your cause and we all know everything here in UWA has to be about that at all times, doesn’t it? Even when you do nothing, it’s because you’ve already done everything and it’s all about what you want and when you want it so there’s no way in hell you’re gonna let our chord get played to it’s fullest because you can’t help but throw a discordant note into the mix. to you, we’re just three common notes to be played at your convenience and for your own glorification assuming that’s what you want that night but I’m here to tell you, Joshua, if you try to stop our song, the only symphony of destruction that’s gonna get played is the one Skylar, Amy and I play on you and whoever is unlucky enough to have followed you into battle that day. And believe you me, we won’t be just three little girls standing against an army of giants for long. We have friends, we have allies and we have other people who hate you more than they don’t like us and they will add their own unique brand of music to the party.
She stands up, looking defiant now.
Bethany Kenyon: Leave us alone to play our common chord in peace, Joshua. Leave us alone to play whatever song we can play that night. Leave us alone or we’re gonna do our best to make sure you never make it to your own big showcase! Skylar, Amy, I’ll see you in the ring and hopefully, it’ll be just us girls playing our tune…
Ashley Kenyon: Carrie got up fifteen minutes ago, she’s in the shower.
Bethany nods slowly, trying to stretch her sleepiness out.
Bethany Kenyon: What about you?
Ashley shrugs.
