Everyone has been somewhere that just felt wrong. Like something was missing. Something was off. Like something just didn't quite make sense. That was what the viewers were treated to when the video suddenly opened. It was like a scene out of a low budget horror movie. The kind of movie that didn't have a huge budget or superstar actors, so it relied solely on the setting to give it the creep factor.
A faint mist seemed to cling to the ground all around. The underbrush, bushes and shrubbery had a rich green overcast giving it that healthy look but at the same time it was too dark. It was a almost vibrant neon green. Almost supernatural in nature.
The trees which should joyously reach toward the sky and the suns wonderful warmth seemed to be fighting one another. Each trying to choke the one next to it. Tangled and narked around one another, branches intertwined and each looking a faint sickly brown.
The all around the woods were chilled, the faintest hints of dew drops falling from leaves, but that wasn't the strangest part. The very wood seemed to breath. Faint rasping breathing gasps and the faintest little traces of whispers seem to come from all directions.
The soft sounds of someone walking through the underbrush swung the camera around and those watching found themselves face to face with Miako. The woman was wearing a simple pair of blue jeans and a white top with her wealth of brown hair hanging down over her face. She raised a single hand and motioned forward with a finger then turned and began to walk.
As they walked through the woods the camera could catch little flashes. Things moving through the shadows cast by the trees. The faintest hints of animistic snarls coming from the thin air in front of the camera. One second there would be something off to the left standing next to a tree, the size of an adult man with arms that hung down to it's thighs with curved talons and then in a blink it was gone, as if it hadn't been there at all.
When the woods finally thinned and opened into a rounded patch of grass, something from behind them deep in the woods wailed in agony. A sound that couldn't be passed off as something the wind through the trees. The camera man spun around and got a shot of the woods behind him and found that the woods seemed to be wavering, like the image of mirage.
The shadows swirled as if they were alive, but didn't venture out into the compound proper where the sunlight shined with glee. The strangest part however was that the strange mist that shimmered along the ground in the woods didn't penetrate past the end of the forest.
The camera man turned again and found Maiko staring at him with her head canted ever so softly to the left.
Maiko: “Didn't I tell you not to wander....”
Camera man: “....I just wanted to get a quick video of the surroundings. It's beautiful here...”
Maiko: “Yes, it is. There is no place like this on earth. The spiritual nexus of our world....but it isn't safe in the woods alone. Only The Dark Messiah can walk there without attracting their attention.”
Camera man: “...What's attention?”
Maiko: “You wouldn't believe us even if we told you.”
Camera man: “Try me?”
Maiko: “....If you insist.”
Miako offered a mocking smile. Cold and evil and even a little mocking chuckle. Like she was speaking to a ignorant child.
Miako: “Everything that goes bump in the night....exists. There is....a kind of cover on our world that separates one world from the other....the Nexus is a place where they cover doesn't cover. A place where reality bends. A place where Nightmares ARE reality. A place that serves as a prison, that keeps those clever, poisonous things....out....of your fragile little world.
Every scary story. Every single event from your childhood that your adult mind convinced you was the workings of a overactive child’s imagination....they all came from here. Every now and then a few escape into your world of illusions and lies and enough people see them to give way to those stories. The legends. The rumors.
In short the things that all of the normal people call....impossible.”
The disbelief on the camera man's face was evident and Maiko only smiled that sinister mocking smile and motioned with her head for him to follow. His belief didn't matter. She knew. Joshua knew. The Children knew the truth of this place. No one else s belief mattered. They didn't live it.
Miako walked the camera man through the compound. Dozens of buildings all recently build with dozens of people all dressed the same milling. They were hammering nails into wood. They were carving trees into planks and others carving strange symbols into the wood. Others carried the wood across the compound and were stacking it next to a square concrete slab.
The concrete slab had layers of burn marks all around it and steel pins planted into the concrete. The steel pins were attached to chains that ran up around the ankles and wrists of a man who was forced into a kneeling position. A steel pin, ring and chain ran front in front of the man and attached to a steel collar that was wrapped around his throat.
The camera man stopped dead in his tracks when he saw who the man was. Broderick Montgomery the third. He was chained in place. His clothing was ripped and torn. He was shirtless but his jeans were ripped and torn like some kind of animal had been clawing at him. His head was down and little droplets of blood dripped from his downcast face onto the concrete.
Standing in front of Brody was the thick form of Joshua Mcbride. Joshua was rubbing his right hand gently and then reached out and grasp a handful of Brody's hair and yanked his head back. Blood leaked from his lip and mouth but his eyes were defiant. Joshua made a little clicking sound with his tongue and then struck out with a hard right hand that took Brody across the jaw and then the lights went out. Brody collapsed to the concrete flat on his stomach and face.
Joshua turned around rubbing his hand again his eyes narrowed until he saw Miako and then he smiled. A sinister and chilling look on the face of a man so cold and vicious.
Maiko: “How is it coming?”
Joshua: “Slow. But it always is at this stage.”
Miako: “The camera man you wanted.”
Joshua looked up at the camera man who stepped back in fear, but Joshua smiled and shook his head very slowly.
Joshua: “I called you here for a reason. I want to discuss sins....the sins of U.W.A. The lies....that cover this whole company. That cover this whole world. Every single thing that every single person watching this right now thinks they know....is a lie.
You lie to make yourself feel better. Every single time you wrap a tie around your neck....your lying to make yourself feel better. Every single time you apply mascara to your eyes...your lying to yourself, but you do it because the world has lied to you.
It has told you that you MUST do this. You MUST look a certain way. That's the only way that the world will accept you. You must be the biggest. The smoothest. The best. Otherwise....the girl won't want you.
And you women out there....you are told your breasts aren't big enough....your clothing isn't tight enough....you are not pretty enough. You need the finest designer clothes. You need the best make up available....so that he will notice you.
Do you see the error of this now? Women give in to the lies to find a man.....and men give in to the lies to find a woman....while all along all they wanted was one another....but the world tells them they won't....unless you buy this. Purchase that. Improve this. Redefine that.
THAT....is HIS....sin.”
Joshua pointed down to Brody who was out cold from the beating. As he pointed to Brody he whispered.
Joshua: “....But he isn't guilty anymore. All that money....that he used to lie to himself and the women around him....is gone. All the fancy cars and thousand dollar suits....all gone. WE have stripped him down to his bear bones and stared directly into the wild chasm that is his insecurity. We will tear away that insecurity and find the self loathing that lay beneath it....and we will crush that self loathing and replace it with peace.
OUR peace. The peace that a man finds them he realizes the entire world has been lying to him.
The peace a man finds when he realizes that the woman he called his only friend....only faked her friendship....because her father was dying.
The peace a man finds when he realizes that the woman who forced him to love her....never loved him. That she used him for her own sinister means. That even know she fights and claws and screams....not because she loves him....but because....how dare someone who isn't her....hurt him.
The peace a man finds when he realizes that the only person in his entire life who judged him based on his merits found him lacking and hated him from the very moment she laid eyes on him. A woman who spoke out publicly about her hatred....a friend who helped her friend shatter him...for no other reason then because she disliked him.
And you....call ME...a monster?”
Joshua opened his arms and stared down at the camera. He leaned down suddenly and whispered into the camera.
Joshua: “At least...i can say I was honest from the beginning. I didn't fake friendship. Love. Or forgiveness. I am what I am....and U.W.A.....are simply liars and cheats. The corrupt leading the corrupt. The evil leading the misguided. The diluted leading the gullible.
A company of SHEEP....masquerading as WOLVES!”
Joshua laughed a cold laugh and then looked directly into the camera and whispers.
Joshua: “....but....i have good news.....”
Joshua motioned for the camera to come closer until all anyone could see was his face and the he said quietly.
Joshua: “....Were here now.”
Joshua backed away from the camera, spinning in little circles and chuckling. When he finally stopped he turned on the camera and exclaimed.
Joshua: “WE are here to teach the gullible....and set straight the diluted.
WE are here to punish the corrupt and lead the misguided.
WE are here to crush the evil and expose the liars.
WE...are your saviors!”
Joshua turned without warning and grasped Brody by the hair and pulled his head back. His eyes were closed and his face was bruised and swollen.
Joshua: “HE needed ME! HE Needed US! HE was lost.....and the world turns...and fate works in strange ways....HE found ME....and out there is a woman who lurks in the shadows. Who dances and sings in the light. She always got what she wanted....until now. WE saved him from her. WE are his saviors.
But now HE has a place to belong. NOW He has a place to call home. OUR home. As one of MY Children.
Jeszika....Aerynn....Oliver....he no longer hears your lies. He no longer listens to your helpless....feeble pleas. Your words mean nothing to him now....NOW he only hears....OUR truth. NOW.....he is home.”
Joshua laughed a deep laugh. A cold and sinister sound. The laughter continued and echoed off the woods around them. Joshua pulls Brody's head up further, almost painful and then kisses him gently on the forehead, then releases it to drop back down to the concrete. The last thing anyone hears before the static takes the scene, is Joshua's mocking laughter.
