J-shades is sitting at a bar by himself, wearing dark blue Jeans, a leather jacket, boots and sunglasses. The bar is relatively small and not overly crowed, except for a group of young people watching a basketball game and being very drunk. He looked for a smaller bar so he wouldn't have to deal with these obnoxious people but he couldn't escape them. He remembered he used to be one of those obnoxious party-ers back home though, so decided to cut them some slack.
He’s doesn't drink much outside of his social circle, but he figured he’d feel better drinking with a bunch of strangers than sitting in his hotel by himself, sober in his thoughts. It’s wasn't the travel that was the problem, though this was something he wasn't really used to. It wasn't the fact that he lost his first match, or even the fact that is was to a girl, He was just happy he was able to finally do what he loves for a living.
It was the loneliness that was getting to him. He wasn't prepared for it. He was so used to being able to turn to a friend after a crappy week, but he left them all behind for this. He’d barely said ten words to anyone he didn't really have to since leaving home. He’d only said about three words today, and that was to the bartender. And that’s when he realized his drink was empty.
Jay: Hey, barkeep.
Bartender: (turning from another customer) Yea?
Jay: (tapping the rim of his glass) could ya fill me up?
BT: Sure thing. (Takes glass and turns to make drink. Comes back with glass full of dark orange alcohol ) Here you go.
Jay: Thanks. (Takes a sip)
BT: Hey, you’re not one of the usuals. You from around here?
Jay: No. I guess I’m here on business.
BT: You’re not sure?
Jay: (Chuckles) I’m positive it’s not the kinda business you’re thinking of.
BT: You don’t look like a suit and tie guy. What are you in?
Jay: (Hesitating) I’m a wrestler.
BT: (Looking fascinated) Really? Like with the tights and all the baby oil?
Jay: (Another chuckle) Well I try to stay away from the oil but yea, you've got the right idea. (Another sip)
BT: Well that’s something! It’s not everyday we get someone like you in here. It’s mostly just --
As if on cue, the bunch of barely 21 college kids all cheer as the home team scores a 3 pointer inside the TV.
BT: Those guys.
Jay: (Smiles) Inescapable. Every city’s got them.
BT: Where you from?
Jay: Staten Island
.
BT: That off of Florida?
Jay: (Laughs) New York. It’s part of New York City.
BT: Oh, yea. Of course.
Jay: Yea. Everyone’s heard of Manhattan and Brooklyn, but Staten Island gets no love.
BT: Being a pro wrestler must help with that. Don’t that announce where you’re from?
Jay: Well yea, but it’s not like my promotion is on national TV or anything. (Sips) Maybe one day.
BT: Maybe it’s more than maybe. How long have you been Wrestling?
Jay: Well I've been training for years now, but I've only had one match in the company I’m in now.
BT: How’d that go?
Jay: You think I’d be in here drinking if it went well?
BT: (Laughs) Good point.
Jay: Not like it was a bad match or anything, I almost had her a couple of times.
BT: Did you say her?
Jay: Yep. (Sips. This one is a little harder to down as the drink is starting to take effect)
BT: (Laughs) Well it is 2014. Sorry about the lose, uh… ?
Jay: Jay. The name’s Jay. And thanks.
BT: No problem. My name’s James. (Extends hand)
Jay: (Shakes hand) Nice to meet you.
James: So, you have another match soon?
Jay: Yea. Next Sunday I've got a match. That’s the business I’m in town for.
James: Ah, we've come full circle. Well, welcome to Portland! You feeling good about this one?
Jay: (Sips) Yea Actually. There’s no pressure about it being my first match, I’m not worried about it being against a girl, and he’s coming off a lose too so I think I’ll be able to get into his head.
James: (Noticing that Jay‘s Drink is empty) Is that the alcohol talking?
Jay: I’ll find out Sunday, I guess. (He stands up, a bit dizzy, then puts some money on the counter) Thanks for the talk.
James: Where are you going?
Jay: I’m gonna go get laid. It’s been a while and that usually gets my confidence up.
James: Well good luck. In your match that is.
Jay: Thanks. I’ll be back to tell you about it, don’t worry. You've become my Portland bar!
Jay walks towards a table where there are some ladies and the scene ends.
