[The scene opens with Vance already working hard at his local gym before work. He is at the bench with what looks like an insane amount of weight on the bar. You can see the intensity and focus as he struggles to push through his last rep. Sweat is pouring down his face, his arms and chest look like they are about to explode. With a huge rush of air escaping his lungs he screams and pushes the rep up and carefully places the bar back down. Absolutely exhausted, he lays there for a minute trying to catch his breath. His workout partner and mentor George Riviera just smiles and shakes his head. The chiseled and grizzly old man has seen a lot of wrestlers come and go in his lifetime.]
George: “Jesus Vance, you just keep impressing me on a daily basis. I thought you were ready for this a year ago when I got out, but this is just incredible power. But you gotta remember that power isn’t everything in pro wrestling. You can be the strongest man in the world but if you can’t go the distance with your stamina it don’t mean a damn thing. I know you have the technicalities of your moves down, the strength to take on a raging bull, but can you keep up the pace of a pro match?”
Vance: “You still don’t have faith in me old man? Hand me that damn rope and I’ll show you what the last year has done for me. This is some shit that you didn’t see cause you had to bitch out and leave the pen before me. Hahahaha.”
[George tosses over the longest skipping rope the gym has. Vance winks at him and walks to the center of the room. He starts off slowly, fluidly whipping the rope above his head and hopping as it comes back down. This goes on for a few moments and George does not look impressed.]
George: “Come on brother, you gotta give me something better than that school yard shit.”
[Vance starts to pick up his pace, the rope becoming a complete blur as he doesn’t miss a beat. As this is going on he starts hopping from one foot to another showcasing his agility. If this wasn’t enough to impress his mentor, Vance starts jumping higher off of each foot completing two rotations of the rope on each jump, and then three. The skipping rope starts emitting a high pierced whistling noise as it moves faster than the human eye can focus. Vance decides that George has probably seen enough and comes to a stop, panting and trying to catch his breath.]
Vance: “Those years of smoking are still playing havoc on my lungs bud. Gotta take a bit of a break for now. Still though, not too shabby eh?”
George: “If you think something like that is going to impress me than maybe you haven’t learned a damn thing at all! Stop trying to show off and just focus on your training you big lug.”
[Vance gives a hearty laugh and smacks his old friend on the back. They start walking together towards the locker room as the scene fades out.]
8:00 am
[Vance and George have finished their morning training session and are walking around downtown Halifax towards the centre where Vance works. They both have a fresh cup of steaming coffee and are walking at a leisurely pace. It is a brisk February morning and you can’t tell where the steam from the coffee ends and the steam from their breath begins. Their boots crunch on the heavily salted sidewalks like walking on a pile of broken glass. Both men look content with their lives as free men and can appreciate the ability to walk to work a lot more than the average Joe.]
Vance: “Isn’t this amazing George? Not that long ago I was stuck in prison with a bunch of no good deadbeats who would have killed me for a fuckin smoke and not thought twice about it. Being in there made me realize what I was taking for granted in life. My demons just didn’t let me take advantage of simple things making me happy. The fact that I can go to the gym on my own time, walk the streets without having to look over my shoulder, and actually do something positive with my life just makes life worth living. And now I have finally been given the chance to make something of myself as a professional wrestler. If you would have told me this was possible four years ago I would have told ya you’re fuckin nuts and beat this shit out of ya for lyin to me. Now look at the possibilities. It is all thanks to you George, you showed me the light, showed me what was important in life. I will forever be in your debt my friend.”
[George just smiles and doesn’t bother responding. He spent many years inside that hell hole and knew exactly what it felt like. They walk for a little while longer and finish their coffee. Before they get to the centre Vance’s phone starts chirping. He looks at it and gets a sly look on his face.]
George: “What is that shit eating grin for? Did you finally hear back from that young piece of trim from your recovery group?”
Vance: “Even better my friend. Just received a message from the UWA, they have scheduled my first match and it is going to be during their first pay per view! This is the day I’ve been waiting for! All this hard work is leading somewhere… huh… this is certainly not what I expected.”
George: “What’s goin on big fella?”
Vance: “They seem to have scheduled me for a triple threat match… with a female in the mix. This should prove to be interesting. Never had to wrestle a broad before… well besides in my bedroom.”
George: “Ha ha ha, good one numb nuts. You never were the cleverest comedian out there. So tell me more about it. Who do they have you matched up against?”
Vance: “Can’t say I have heard of either of these people before, they must be newcomers like me. The guy goes by the name The Garbage Man… very creative. The broad is named Kaylyn James Evans. You ever have to deal with a triple threat or fighting a female during your career Georgie?”
[George remains silent for a few minutes as they walk to their destination. They arrive outside a run down looking town house. The red paint is peeling off the walls, shingles are hanging precariously from the roof, and the front steps have large cracks through them. Obviously this building has seen better days. On the door is a small plaque informing people it is the office of the Recovery for Wellness Centre. The two men stop outside the front steps and stare off into the distance for a moment.]
Vance: “So you gonna answer my question or what old man? Preferably before you die of old age.”
George: “Back in my day wrestling was a lot simpler to be honest. Sure we had triple threat matches every now and then, but women were far down the road in the future. My advice to you is to not underestimate your opponents regardless of size or gender. If these people have made it this far in the business, then they have some decent skills. I hope you don’t have anything against hitting a woman, cause she sure as hell won’t have any problems beatin on you. You still have a little under two weeks to figure this out, so I will do some research and help you come up with a game plan.”
Vance: “I knew I could count on you my friend. Regardless of how good these two are they aren’t gonna stand a chance anyways. I have been through too damn much to let them get in the way of me making it big. I will be victorious!.”
[Vance has a goofy grin on his face, some would say he almost looks proud of that line.]
George: “Oh Vance that may just be the lamest catchphrase I have heard in the history of wrestling. My retarded grandson could come up with a better line than that. You certainly aren’t a master of the English language. Maybe we need to hire a PR guy to give you a hand with some of this stuff while you stick to improving your wrestling skills. We don’t want your career to end because the fans can’t take you seriously. If you play your cards right you have a real shot for longevity is this business, but you need the proper tools to do the job. We will have to come up with a steady paycheck first. This counseling gig may make you feel good about what you do, but it certainly isn’t helping your wallet.”
Vance: “I do have to say you are always brutally honest with me man. Ain’t my fault I started snortin blow during my formative years. My brain just don’t want to work with me sometimes. Whatever I lack upstairs I make up for in raw talent and brute force. Besides, I’ve got you around to take care of the hard stuff.”
[George shakes his head and grins sheepishly. He can’t deny the fact that Vance is a bit slow in the head but he loves the guy anyways. Hell, if Vance didn’t make an appearance in his life he would have been dead three years ago, but that is a story for another day.]
Vance: “That gets me thinkin Georgie, and I know that sounds ironic… and yes I fucking know what ironic means. Anyways, I haven’t officially asked you for your help yet. You’ve seen me through this far, wouldn’t have gotten here without ya. So what do you say friend? Would you officially be my manager?”
[George tries hard to hold back his adoring smile and the tears that suddenly rush to his eyes.]
George: “Of course I will ya big bastard. Besides, you will never make it at the pro level without me on your ass twenty four seven. Who else is gonna kick your ass when you’re stupid?”
Vance: “Great, it’s settled then. You can come on this rollercoaster of a ride with me. I tell ya George, I see big things in our future. I’m out of jail, clean and sober, and starting on a new chapter in my life. There is no one else I would rather have on this journey with me. Thanks man.”
[Vance slowly starts to stick out his hand towards George. The old man offers him a huge smile and quickly pulls the big man in for a hug. Both of these guys couldn’t believe the luck they have had in turning their lives around. It felt like the hard work was finally paying off.]
George: “Enough of the teary eyed sissy shit Vance, you go in to work while I figure out how we are going to wipe the mat with these two no names. They have no clue what they are gonna be facing when they step into the ring with the likes of you.”
[The men say their goodbyes and both start to walk away, Vance into his dilapidated office and George into the distance. Finally life is starting to feel right for the both of them and they can’t wait to see what the future holds. George quietly daydreams of raising Vances' arm in victory with the UWA World Heavyweight Championship belt between the two of them.]
