Coming home is usually a joyous occasion. You’ve ended a work day or a trip somewhere and you get to enjoy the relief that familiar surroundings engender in the weary traveler even if the trip was only twenty minutes up the road to work. For Bethany Kenyon, coming home from this particular trip was a little more daunting because of the presence of two other people waiting for her inside the domicile they were currently occupying.
She was supposed to have been home already.
But the events of the last couple of days had forced her to postpone for a day. On Monday, the latest UWA Mayhem show had ended with her friend, Jeszika Gautier, injured from a seemingly random attack from Fraser Freeman and had also resulted in her own assault in an end of the show group war that escalated beyond her control too quickly to cope with. Tuesday, she’d spent helping get Jeszika checked out in the hospital and now, on Wednesday, with Jeszika safely home across town, Bethany arrives at the Arsenal communally owned beach house, pausing at the door.
Her hand reaches for the handle but stops short as thoughts of what the inhabitants would think when they saw the bruises on her face. Her boyfriend, Brody Montgomery, and their friend, Jayni Sullivan, were inside awaiting her return so they could view the show together. It had been Jayni’s idea to wait as everyone involved knew Brody was probably not likely to react well to what he saw and with his own injuries still healing, that was not a situation anyone wished to see.
How would they react to what they would see?
How would they react just to seeing her face right now?
How would they react to what happened to Jeszika?
With all of this weighing heavily on her mind, Bethany swallows hard and turns the handle. The door opens and she steps inside, the sounds of an intense game of chess going on in the next room. She can’t help but smile at the sound because it means they had stuck to their word. At the sound of the door, Jayni’s voice rings out.
Jayni: He's cheating!
Almost immediately, Brody’s voice follows, laughing.
Brody: No, you just suck.
Bethany nods happily as she walks into the main room of the house to find Brody and Jayni eagerly sitting at the table over a chessboard. As the two turn to look, a gasp comes from Jayni’s lips. Brody’s jaw drops and Jayni jumps from her seat to check bethany over, her bruises causing exactly the reaction she’d feared.
Brody: How the hell did that happen? you weren't even booked?!
Bethany takes a deep breath.
Bethany: There was an incident during the main event.
Brody turns his full attention to her as Jayni stands nearby looking over the battle scars.
Brody: 'Define incident Bethy, what did your bitch of a sister do now?
Pausing for a second, Brody frowns.
Brody: ....Main Event, that was Sentinel and that miscreant Hunter. Why were you even involved?
Bethany leans against the door, looking slightly deflated.
Bethany: Ash and Cronos jumped the railing and went after Dorian. I’d seen one of Hunter’s boys around and knew what would be coming next and I’d already seen one friend get hurt that night when Freeman snapped on Jezzy. So, Baron, Craven, Freeman, Travis, Amy and I all ended up out there trying to help Dorian. Hunter’s goon squad showed up and they were followed by the Children. Eventually, Ash and Cronos got Dorian, Hunter and the goon squad got SCK and the Children got Travis and Amy… before they…
Her voice breaks as she tries to recount the ending of the show.
Bethany: They got me… and strung me up from the big screen so that I looked like an upside down cross.
Simultaneously, two things happen. Jayni shakes her head fiercely and throws her arms around Bethany's shoulders, hugging her and Brody slams his fist down on the table, chess pieces scattering around him as he swears, in what sounds like three languages. Jayni jumps back in shock at the sudden slam and Brody looks up.
Brody: Let me get this straight. Freeman.... attacked Jez? Cronos is now after Dorian and the Children actually hung you like a inverted cross? And it's just you and Dorian now?
Bethany nods to him.
Bethany: There was another incident that was a little weird earlier in the night. When SCK fought the Children, Craven was at ringside and Michael… screamed at him.
Brody: Michael screamed at someone?
This alone seems to mystify him as he lifts a brow and cants his head.
Brody: I don't think he's ever lost his cool before.
Bethany sighs.
Bethany: Whatever it was, they got everybody in the end… except Jezzy, who was already on the way to the hospital.
Brody: Hospital? How bad was this attack?
Bethany: Concussion and broken arm.
Brody: It's happening all over again.
Brody groans and puts his face in his hands. Jayni lays her own hand on Bethany's shoulder.
Jayni: He'd ask this.....but all he can see is you at war and being hurt again....so....um.....are you okay?
Bethany hugs Jayni.
Bethany: Physically, bruised a little, I’ll be fine.
Jayni: I will let Brody tend to you physically.
Jayni actually blushes a little but smiles.
Jayni: How about mentally? Emotionally? I was helpful for him when he escaped the Children.
Bethany: I… don’t know… I’ve never had somebody pull a Drago on me before.
Jayni: A Drago?
Bethany nods slowly.
Bethany: Michael told Danika that she must break me, that I don’t get to be the only one who makes it out intact.
Jayni: Then all you have to do is stay you Bethy. Let us help you. Brody can do what.....he does and i can help in anyway i can. As long as you....do not give in to the despair and hate they lose.
Brody glances up then and locks eyes with Bethany.
Brody: Annoyingly upbeat isn't she?
Bethany smiles at him.
Bethany: You like it and you know it.
Brody: She does have a point. Just be you Babe. You kept trying to reach Aerynn.....even after Carrie and Billy. And you still hold hope for Ashley, i know you do. Just keep being you.
Brody thumbs over at Jayni who sticks out her tongue.
Brody: You don't want to leave me all alone with her do you? Can you imagine how annoyingly.....plaid everything would be?
Bethany shrugs.
Bethany: Does that mean you wouldn’t like my old school jumper?
Again two things happen simultaneously. Jayni turns to look at Bethany and Brody's head shoots around and they almost in unison they say the same thing.
Brody & Jayni: School girl outfit?
Bethany nods.
Bethany: There was a reunion and somebody got one of those crazy ideas that we should all wear the old uniforms so I have a couple that fit. It’s green and black plaid.
Jayni blushes a deep crimson but Brody grins openly at that and one of his brows goes up.
Brody: And....where is this jumper located? Home?
Bethany nods.
Bethany: Both of them are, yes, with the white blouses and the saddle shoes. I think I even have some of the hair ribbons we used to wear with them.
Brody gingerly rises from the table as Jayni turns away and mutters something that sounds an awful lot like, "You gotta be freaking kidding me" before excusing herself to the kitchen. Brody makes his way to Bethany and slides his arms around her waist.
Brody: Soon we are gonna have a talk about jumpers, and blouses and ribbons. For now....what do you need from me, Babe?
Bethany: We are?
Brody: Oh, by god yes.
Brody says with a wide little grin. Bethany nods to the kitchen.
Bethany: Is she ok?
Brody: Is she.....
Brody's grin widens and he nods gently.
Brody: Yea, she will be fine. You just gave her a shock is all.
Bethany nods, still glancing towards the kitchen.
Bethany: What’s her… story? Why isn’t she… why doesn’t she seem to have anybody?
Brody: Personally, i think it's because she missed the one she wanted. She had a boyfriend. Her first, guy was a real douchebag and then this stray dog comes into her life and she devotes herself to nursing it back to health.
Brody shrugs and leans on the wall with his arms around Bethany's waist and pulls her into him, to rest against him.
Brody: Doesn't help she's bi and incredibly picky. Thinks you are about the most adorable thing she's ever seen, but keeps it to herself.
She nods, moving her gaze to make eye contact with him.
Bethany: You are way more than a stray dog, Mister Montgomery. I can’t believe she’s…
Trailing off, Bethany shakes her head in disbelief.
Bethany: How did you never… with her?
Brody: I call em like i see em. When i escaped the children, i was a stray dog. Mangy and unkempt. i am more of the old loveable hound dog now, but then? I was very much a stray.
When she asks why they never he chuckles and shrugs.
Brody: At first it was because she had a boyfriend....and then when you convinced me to come back, she tried, but i told her i wanted to see about you.....she respected it.
Bethany nods.
Bethany: That poor girl is one of those, she’s beautiful but will never believe it herself types, isn’t she?
As she stares at him, a different look enters Bethany’s eyes.
Bethany: How have we never even talked about that before?
Brody: Yea. She doesn't think she is overly attractive. When compared to Jezy she thinks she is ugly, and you she's hot garbage she says. Not everyone can be Bethany Kenyon though.
When she asks how they hadn't discussed it before he lifts a brow.
Brody: Discussed what? If she and I....?
Bethany’s jaw drops.
Bethany: Hot… garbage?
Her eyes slowly move to the kitchen.
Bethany: Oh we gotta do something about that…
Brody: Not much you can do about a person's self image Bethy. She's got us here, and she out from under her brother's watchful eye. So, she's happy.
Bethany: She looks at both of us like that, doesn’t she? That wishful look…
Brody: I know she looks at me like that sometimes, i think with you it's more of a 'Dear god stop tormenting me with this woman!
And with that he actually laughs.
Bethany: Tormenting, eh?
Brody: For someone like her? Yes, i would call it tormenting. There are things which could make it worst, but as per normal, yea tormenting.
Bethany’s face falls.
Bethany: How am I tormenting her? What could make it worse?
Brody: You torment by simply being you Bethy.
Brody reaches out and pokes a single finger into the side of her butt.
Brody: An eight, easy.
And then reaches up and pokes the same finger into the side of her left boob.
Brody: A hard nine, without question, and then there are the legs and eyes and lips and face and hair. Purrfect.
When she asks about making it worst he lifts a brow and chuckles.
Brody: Ask her to go lingerie shopping with you and watch her eye pop out of her head.
Bethany stands there staring at him.
Bethany: Is there any way I can… ?
Brody: Can what M'dear?
Bethany: Make it better for her?
Brody: I don't think so. Don't even tell her you know. just act normal. She'll blush from time to time and run away to catch her breath every now and then, but she won't make a nuisance of herself.
Bethany shakes her head.
Bethany: I’m amazed you haven’t asked to bring her into the bedroom.
Brody: I considered gift wrapping her and giving giving you a christmas present, but that's not something i would do without talking to you first. Great way to get smacked upside the head.
Bethany: She'd do that?
Brody: I wasn't sure before, but considering that Jumper reaction.....yea, i would say so.
And again, he chuckles lightly.
Bethany: And you would?
Brody: My only concern is you'd get so caught up you'd forget about me completely.
Brody grins down at her then.
Brody: You were more into women, and who knows what would happen if you got another taste.....uh....figuratively speaking.
Bethany smirks playfully.
Bethany: Maybe I should bring both of my jumpers here and see how you teach class, Mister Montgomery…
She would see him visibly twitch.
Brody: You are a very, very bad girl Bethany Kenyon. That is an imagine i am not gonna get out of my head.
Bethany nods.
Bethany: So you could handle some… personal tutoring for the class, both of us?
And then comes another twitch and Brody lifts a brow and looks down at Bethany.
Brody: Think you could stop giving an oral report long enough to be tutored?
He grins.
Bethany: I believe I need... extra help... sir.
A little smirk plays across his lips.
Brody: Go and get changed into something more comfortable Bethy.
A faint little glimmer in his eyes now. Yea, she wins.
Bethany nods.
Bethany: Yes… sir…
She turns and wanders off, knowing full well this is gonna be a night to remember.
11/6/15
Bethany Kenyon stands before the camera the beach at her back, a light rain falling on the sand.
Bethany: Last Mayhem was not a good night for me, I’m sure that comes as no surprise to anyone who either watched it all happen or was there in person. I…
She shakes her head, looking guilty and ashamed.
Bethany: I have never felt that stupid or helpless inside a wrestling arena ever before in my life. I had to watch one of my best friends get taken to a hospital and then watch another get assaulted by my own sister because she can’t handle that someone else might actually deserve the attention instead of her.
She nods to the floor.
Bethany: But it didn’t stop with my little sister and her giant, did it?
Looking back up, she shakes her head.
Bethany: No, Michael Rivers and Cole Hunter both decided that was the perfect time to wade into action as well and while Cole Hunter and his minions left me to the dogs for their own purposes, Michael Rivers did not. The Children of Nephilim decided they needed to make an example of me because…
She shrugs, looking worried and annoyed simultaneously.
Bethany: I’m the one, aren’t I? I’m the one left over…
She nods grimly.
Bethany: I’m the one who got away.
She turns back to the ocean and watches the waves for a second.
Bethany: Brody loves it here and I can see why. It’s beautiful and it’s usually quite serene. It’s nothing like what goes on at work where the Children of Nephilim have had a reign of terror almost from day one.
Turning back to the camera, Bethany nods grimly again.
Bethany: Nick Daniels went first and though he supposedly escaped your clutches, he never dared come back, did he? Dorian got put on the shelf by you and when he came back, he just wasn’t quite the same and he’s still trying to find who he was and who he is. Jeszika broke under the strain, Aerynn went insane, Brody broke mentally and physically and is still trying to put the pieces back together. My sister snapped and went off on her own, SCK nearly imploded under its own weight, Kyle Travis and Amy Zing have both gone a little crazy and yet, here I stand…
The camera zooms in to a close-up on her face.
Bethany: Unbowed, unbroken and unwilling to yield to whatever you want just because you’ve decided that’s not allowed.
She shrugs and glares back into the camera.
Bethany: Well that’s just too damn bad because try as you might, I’m not falling to pieces because you wish it, Mister Devilman. Joshua and Maiko tried and I get it, he failed because he was an empty windbag who didn’t truly understand the power he was allowed to wield and I get that you’re different because he didn’t care and you do but I’m gonna ask you the same thing now that I asked him once upon a time…
She nods as the camera backs off again.
Bethany: What are you and Danika gonna do, Michael, if you fail too? What are you gonna do when you throw whatever you’ve got in that book of whatever at me and I don’t break… again?
She turns to watch the rain for a second and then turns back.
Bethany: Am I going to stand here and tell you I’m gonna stand in defiance of you and your will? That I’m gonna stand up to whatever you throw at me and then come back for more until you get it through your thick skulls that you just can’t do it?
She nods forcefully.
Bethany: You bet your ass, I am! And when this is all over, I’ll still be the one you couldn’t make do what you wanted. I’ll still be the defiant one standing in your way. I’ll still be Bethany Kenyon, unbowed, unbroken and unwilling to roll over for you and your demon dogs of war!
