Standing together just outside the Confessional Room, the women known to the world as Artemis and Jade stare at the door, a door they have never seen closed to them before. This was not like Cole and they both knew it. He never closes this door, especially not when he would need to use it soon.
Jade: Have you ever seen him like this?
Artemis shakes her head.
Artemis: No…
Jade nods slowly, grimly.
Jade: Should we be worried?
As Jade glances back to the door, Artemis’s answer reaches her ears.
Artemis: Perhaps.
Jade moves her gaze from the door to the Confessional Room to Artemis.
Jade: Jackie… what is going on?
The answer comes back and does nothing to relieve Jade’s anxiety.
Artemis: I don’t know, but I’ll try find out
She opens the confessional door and enters cautiously. Jade follows her, sticking her head inside.
Jade: Are you sure this is a good idea? I mean… he might not want us in here if the door was closed and…
She trails off, looking around at the room. The screen was hanging on the back wall as always, the chair and stool that were utilized in the same place they always were and the camera still stood right next to the door just to the left of where Artemis and Jade currently stood.
Jade: It doesn’t look any different…
She shakes her head in almost disbelief.
Jade: Somehow, I expected it to look off, but besides being empty…
As the two look around, they step inside far enough to close the door behind them.
Jade: You think maybe he won’t bother? I mean, I’d expect he would after what happened at the last show and Fraser getting himself arrested in Iowa for assaulting that kid chef.
She smirks cruelly.
Jade: He always was kind of a musclehead that way. I used to love it when he’d come save me like that when somebody would get a little too rough.
Artemis: Oh and what about what he did to Jeszika…
Jade ponders this, stroking her chin for a second.
Jade: I’ve seen him like that before, usually when some jackass decided I was a punching bag instead of somebody to have fun with.
Artemis smirks just as cruelly as Jade does.
Artemis: It’s delightful to see him… crumbling away under the.. pressure we've put on him.
Jade nods enthusiastically.
Jade: I knew it’d hurt him but to see him like this, it’s almost too good to be true.
Slowly, the smirk fades off her face to be replaced with what appears to be a mask of pure fury.
Jade: He told me for the longest time I wasn’t good enough for him because of what i did for a living. Refused to even give me a chance just because I worked the way i did. I begged him for years and he kept saying no…
Artemis can’t help but look disgusted.
Artemis: if he truly loved you, he would have accepted you as you were, no ifs, buts or maybes.
Jade nods grimly.
Jade: I hate him, Jackie! I hate him for making me wait so goddamn long, for leading me on, giving me a little taste only to take it away. I hate him for giving it back and then abandoning me for no reason at all!
Her hands ball into fists and her eyes start to moisten even as the fury remains.
Jade: How could he do that to me, Jackie? I loved him, he knew I loved him and he said he loved me! How could he just leave me hanging like that?
Artemis: Cos he's a good for nothing asswipe, like Apollo was…
Jade nods.
Jade: How did it feel when you got to make him suffer?
A look comes over Artemis’s face that tells Jade all she needs to know.
Artemis: Liberating... orgasmic… like nothing I've ever felt before…
Jade smiles.
Jade: Do you think I’ll ever get to feel something that magical with Fraser?
Artemis nods slightly.
Artemis: Maybe… if Cole has it his way, you will.
Jade nods, smiling icily.
Jade: I don’t know how to thank you for this, Jackie.
Artemis shrugs as if the answer should be obvious.
Artemis: Just live and enjoy life Jazzy… that's all I can ask.
Jade nods.
Jade: God, I love you.
She moves in and kisses Artemis passionately. Just then, the door opens and Cole Hunter leans in, nodding to both of them solemnly.
Cole: Jackie, Jazzy, your presence is requested for the solemn rite to be performed presently inside the adjacent quarters.
The ladies nod and follow him back out the door and into another room equipped with a camera. A lectern stands in front of the back wall directly before the camera, a couple of seats facing the lectern sitting on either side of a big black heart-shaped box. Cole motions to the seats and Artemis and Jade take their places on either side of the box, Artemis on the right, Jade on the left. Cole turns on the camera and then walks into the shot, taking his place at the lectern.
Cole: Companions, confidants and co-workers, I appear before you on this solemn occasion as the bearer of grim tidings. Where once we were burdened with glorious purpose, righteous vengeance within our grasp, our standing has been irrevocably altered by unfortunate circumstances.
Artemis and Jade stare at him in wide wonder, both searching for an answer to the question hanging in the air between them. Cole remains low key, his face almost impassive.
Cole: The recent actions of a secondary target have involuntarily compelled an alteration of focus…
Nodding slightly, Cole glares into the camera.
Cole: Namely, Fraser Freeman has unwittingly committed an assassination and massacred a dream held sacred to me. By removing Jeszika Gautier from the equation, Mister Freeman has become something he really didn’t want to be…
A slow smirk creeps across Cole’s face, a cold, mirthless smirk that’s as icy as it is unsettling to Jade and Artemis.
Cole: You’re moving up in the world, Mister Freeman.
Jade starts to question but stops as Cole nods acknowledgingly to her.
Cole: Where once upon a time, you were an amusing dalliance worthy of enough attention as to be a method for passing the time required for the primary target to make her return to availability, now…
Trailing off, the smirk fades back into a cold rage.
Cole: Now…
He glares directly into the camera
Cole: Now, you have killed any chance I had at living my dream of seeing her suffer properly. You took the one thing i wanted most in this word and you smashed it into a million tiny pieces, the likes of which no return is likely to be possible and for this, now…
He presses another button on the remote control unit he’d used to turn on the camera and the lights on the outside walls turn on to reveal the Five, Ray Smyth, Rod Fielding, Robert Reznik, Craig Bush and Johnny Hull, standing around him in a semicircle. The heart-shaped box opens to reveal Ember Freeman lying there in the dirty, torn clothes she was wearing when she was first taken, strapped to a table as if she’s being readied for surgery. She looks up, her eyes fighting the light to focus as she does so. Cole smirks and Ember screams.
Cole: Oh, Mister North, I assure you, when we finish enjoying the virtues of Mistr Freeman’s daughter, I will come to Mayhem and assist you in seeing how the world really can be.
He nods to the camera.
Cole: Remember, Mister Freeman, this…
He nods to Ember.
Cole: This is on you… Daddy…
Jade: Have you ever seen him like this?
Artemis shakes her head.
Artemis: No…
Jade nods slowly, grimly.
