Six years ago...
Sariel sneaks into the office. No one was in here currently and the phone almost called her as it sat there with it’s blinking lights. She glances back behind her to see if anyone is there to see her do this and, seeing that she’s alone, turns back to the phone. The boys had done their job well and now it was her turn to return the favor. None of them wanted to be there. None of them had EVER wanted to be there. Every one of them was in the same boat, desperately trying to seek escape from the hell they were seemingly forced into. Sariel makes her way to the phone, and quickly dials the number home. A second later, a female voice answers on the first ring.
Serafina Kojima]Hello?
Sariel’s bottom lip quivers at the sound of her mother’s voice.
Sariel: Mama?
The voice on the other end suddenly goes cold.
Serafina Kojima]Sara…
Sariel takes a deep breath and hopes for the best. It was now or never!
Sariel: I wanna come home.
The returning voice betrays nothing in her answer or tone.
Serafina Kojima]When your semester is over we can discuss the possibility.
This was what Sariel had feared the most, even above being detected in her escape attempt.
Sariel: But, Mama...
The other voice returns, cutting her off abruptly.
Serafina Kojima]You need this, Sara.
She opens her eyes, her voice becoming pleading.
Sariel: Mama, please… they’re doing things...
The voice comes back, unsympathetic and skeptical of her daughter’s words.
Serafina Kojima]What kind of things?
Sariel glances back at the door. She was still free and clear.
Sariel: They’re trying to change me!
The unsympathetic tone continues.
Serafina Kojima]Well, I would certainly hope so! We didn’t send you to that Catholic School just so you could make new friends.
Sariel glances back at the door again, how much time did she have left to convince her?
Sariel: But, Mama…
Again, she’s cut off before she can finish her protest.
Serafina Kojima]No buts, you’re there because you need the help they can give you!
Swallowing hard, Sariel stares at the door, waiting for it to fly open any second now.
Sariel: Please don’t make me stay here, Mama!
The voice comes back spitting venom.
Serafina Kojima]You must!
Almost shaking now, Sariel grips the phone with both hands.
Sariel: But, why?
Disgust fills her ear.
Serafina Kojima]You know why.
Sariel falls to her knees.
Sariel: I said I was sorry, Mama!
Her mother remains unmoved.
Serafina Kojima]Sorry won’t cut it this time! I did not name you as an angel of the Lord just so you could defy His will!
Sariel’s eyes squeeze shut again. She was really going to be stuck here.
Sariel: But…
One more time, her protest is cut short.
Serafina Kojima]You know exactly what you have done!
The definitive tone in her mother’s voice is all she needs to hear. There would be no respite or reprieve.
Sariel: Yes, Mama.
More venom spits out of the phone.
Serafina Kojima]And do NOT try calling those demon spawn twins’ parents, they are in complete agreement on this!
Sariel nods, tears starting to run down her face even as she remains on her knees. She could only imagine what the punishment would be when she was found out now. Her mother was sure to make another call to alert those in charge and when she did…
Sariel: Yes, Mama.
The call ends and Sariel sets the phone back up on the desk. As she sits there on her knees crying, the door opens and her worst fear walks in.
Father Ash: You were warned about this, Sariel.
She nods.
Sariel: Yes, Father Ash.
The priest steps away from the door allowing it to close behind him.
Father Ash: The Bishop will need to be alerted to your transgression.
Sariel nods.
Sariel: I am ready for my confession.
The priest shakes his head.
Father Ash: I’m afraid, that will not be proper reconciliation… penance will be required for your atonement this time.
Sariel’s jaw clenches.
Sariel: Yes, Father.
