Katt Industries Special Services…
The name had meant many things to many people over the years. What had started as cheeky name for a mail-order room started by a couple of friends, Selina Katt and Holly Francis, that morphed into more private investigation-type jobs after the two finished their training. The name had been Holly’s idea, she had liked the way it flowed and the way it looked on a business card and Selina had enjoyed the look on prospective clients’ faces when they read it out loud.
The two had decided early on to keep their professional and personal lives separate so when they got married, Selina to a several generations in baker named Bruce Kenyon and Holly to a man that worked in their office named Ted Peltier. Both started families and worked hard to keep them separate by living in different parts of the city so that their children didn’t mingle. Ted Peltier started working from home more so that their children, Cal and Nikki, wouldn’t feel the sting of both of their parents keeping PI hours.
Selina and Bruce put a room in at the bakery to allow their children, Khary, Bethany and Ashley, a place to play after school that would also keep them from feeling the sting of their parents’ working hours.
Eventually, tragedy struck both families when Selina Kenyon fell ill and quickly succumbed to her illness and then Holly and Ted Peltier were killed in a car crash while traveling in Texas.
Their daughters, Bethany and Ashley Kenyon and Nikki Peltier along with Nikki’s lifelong friend, Jeszika Gautier, took over the family business together and took it to new heights both in terms of quality of work and financial income.
Now, today, Bethany Kenyon and Nikki Peltier sit at Bethany’s kitchen table, pages and pages of documents spread out as the two go over everything there is to go over in their professional lives. The two had spent the last five years working together in a company they both technically inherited from their late mothers. Along with their friend, Jeszika Gautier, and Bethany’s younger sister, Ashley Kenyon, they had managed to make a nice income for themselves and now that things were as they were, Nikki had called to ask if they could go over things together.
Nikki Peltier: So, everything taken into consideration…
Bethany nods, waiting hopefully as Nikki makes some final calculations.
Nikki Peltier: We all should have a nice little nest egg.
Bethany sits back in her chair, not sure if this is good news or bad. Nikki scans her friend’s eyes and frowns.
Nikki Peltier: What’s wrong, Bethy?
Sighing, Bethany manages a shrug.
Bethany Kenyon: I know with Jezzy sort of…
She bites her bottom lip and Nikki nods knowingly.
Nikki Peltier: Yeah…
Bethany Kenyon: And with Ash…
She shakes her head, her mixed emotions quite plain to see.
Bethany Kenyon: What did I do wrong, Nik?
Nikki shrugs, shaking her head sadly.
Nikki Peltier: I don’t know, but whatever it was, I must have done it too.
Bethany’s hand clenches into a fist, hovering above the papers still spread about the table before them.
Bethany Kenyon: I just…
She trails off, shaking her head.
Bethany Kenyon: I don’t know if I can do it, Nik. She’s my baby sister…
Nikki nods, patting Bethany’s hand.
Nikki Peltier: I know, it’s a bad situation. Even just from a business standpoint, it hurt us on two fronts. It cuts into the jobs we can take outside the ring and inside it…
Bethany nods.
Bethany Kenyon: Fighting her just… it never…
Nikki tries to smile, sadness creeping into her eyes.
Nikki Peltier: I never thought I’d have to worry about that contract either. I’m half-surprised she hasn’t demanded I come manage her too more than she has just to be nasty to us.
Bethany shrugs.
Bethany Kenyon: She seems to like the being on her own part for the moment.
Nikki glances down at the charts and starts pulling them in together.
Nikki Peltier: Well, we managed to pay off the medical stuff. Insurance helped as did Jonas picking up part of Billy’s tab.
Bethany smiles sadly.
Bethany Kenyon: That was nice of him.
Nikki nods her agreement.
Nikki Peltier: Have you talked to Billy lately?
Bethany nods.
Bethany Kenyon: He and Ash broke up a while ago, apparently had a second talk and nothing really changed. He thinks she’s been seeing somebody else.
Nikki frowns.
Nikki Peltier: Why does he think that?
Bethany nods knowingly.
Bethany Kenyon: Because she hasn’t been coming to Prey at all and he apparently bumped into some guy from across town that told him she’d been to some dive.
Nikki glances down at a particular print out and scans it.
Nikki Peltier: Sanctuary?
Bethany shakes her head.
Bethany Kenyon: No, that’d be too close to home too since your family owns it.
As the two of them sit there, Bethany’s boyfriend, Brody Montgomery, comes walking into the room.
Brody Montgomery: Did you come to any conclusions, yet?
Bethany turns to him and nods.
Bethany Kenyon: One you’d like…
Brody grins almost playfully.
Brody Montgomery: Oh?
Nikki nods.
Nikki Peltier: She doesn’t need to work any outside of UWA if she doesn’t want to any time soon.
Brody’s smile broadens.
Brody Montgomery: Definitely good news.
Bethany looks at the table, seemingly almost upset by this reaction.
Bethany Kenyon: I’m happy that you’re happy about it…
Brody walks over and pulls up a third chair at the table, sitting across from both women.
Brody Montgomery: You know why, Beth.
Bethany nods knowingly.
Bethany Kenyon: You think it’s an unnecessary risk to take considering I’ve saved and don’t spend like I’m Montgomery Brewster…
Brody nods, looking both serious and worried.
Brody Montgomery: It IS an unnecessary risk, Beth. None of you need the money anymore and there’s no reason to willingly put yourselves in a position to be shot at or have somebody want to shiv you or blow you up or anything else when you don’t have to. You’re not military or law enforcement and you’ve all experienced enough success in UWA that it’s just not something you all need to be doing anymore.
Seeing the look on her face, he softens and reaches out to her hand much the same way Nikki did earlier.
Brody Montgomery: I know you like helping people and you loved doing so working with your family as a unit but that…
Bethany nods before he can finish the thought.
Bethany Kenyon: I know, there is no unit anymore.
Nikki shrugs.
Nikki Peltier: Well, there is but…
Bethany shakes her head sadly.
Bethany Kenyon: Not without Ash, there’s not. Carrie tried to fit into that slot and it almost got her killed.
Brody Montgomery: And you!
Bethany nods acknowledgingly at Brody’s rebuke.
Bethany Kenyon: And me…
Nikki quickly collects the papers back together.
Nikki Peltier: Well, financially, we’ve managed even with some of us trying not to.
She looks at Bethany and Brody, hopeful that they’ll think it’s at least a little funny as well. Bethany just nods sadly while Brody smiles like he’s being polite.
Nikki Peltier: Are you sure you won’t need to fix anything up on your bike?
Brody shakes his head, trying to look both grateful and firm.
Brody Montgomery: Nobody touches that but me.
Bethany finally manages a playful smirk.
Bethany Kenyon: Except for my ass every so often?
Brody can only nod in response.
Brody Montgomery: True story, another thing nobody touches but me.
Bethany grins back.
Bethany Kenyon: True story.
Brody leans over and kisses Bethany lovingly as Nikki starts to box up all the stuff she’d brought over for this meeting.
Brody Montgomery: Do you need a hand taking that out to the car?
Nikki smiles brightly, yet sheepishly.
Nikki Peltier: Yes, please?
Brody nods and stands up to help her take the stuff to the car.
Nikki Peltier: Don’t worry, Bethy, we’ll get together with Jezzy and decide what to do completely here soon. No rush since we don’t have to close completely but we don’t need to hurry into anything either. We’ve managed to avoid big jobs for a bit here, no reason to break that streak.
Bethany nods slowly.
Bethany Kenyon: Yeah…
Nikki hugs her and then picks up a box of documents. As Nikki starts for the door, Brody picks up the second box and then kisses the top of Bethany’s head.
Brody Montgomery: Be right back, Babe.
Bethany nods and brody follows Nikki out to her car.
Nikki Peltier: We can put them in the trunk here.
Brody nods and does as asked.
Brody Montgomery: Are you serious about not needing to work anymore?
Nikki nods.
Nikki Peltier: Bethy has a nice little nest egg she’s managed to carve out, she was the one who always had the least personal overhead, smallest house, least toys, old car that was paid before before she ever got hold of it, no real habits to speak of.
Brody nods slowly.
Brody Montgomery: Somebody else tended to pay when you went out?
Nikki shrugs, looking almost embarrassed.
Nikki Peltier: Four pretty girls in a bar full of lonely horny men?
Brody nods, trying not to laugh.
Brody Montgomery: True story!
He pauses as Nikki closes her trunk.
Brody Montgomery: Sometimes those four pretty girls all end up in the home of a single horny man.
Nikki smiles, blushing.
Nikki Peltier: True story?
They start to laugh when suddenly, a scream comes from inside the house.
Brody Montgomery: The fuck?
Nikki starts straight for the door.
Nikki Peltier: Oh no, Bethy…
Brody starts in after her.
Nikki Peltier: Ash must have said something in public…
Brody starts to say something but bites his tongue, his jaw clenching and his teeth grinding in rage as they hurry into the kitchen where they find Bethany standing near the table staring at her laptop. Nikki and Brody move around to find her shaking.
Nikki Peltier: Oh shit…
Brody starts for the computer but Nikki snaps her fingers at him.
Nikki Peltier: She’s gonna fall!
Brody looks up and moves in behind just as Bethany starts to collapse. Nikki grabs her feet and they move her to the living room couch. A few seconds later, Bethany looks up at them and her hands come to her face, covering her eyes.
Nikki Peltier: Bethy… what?
Bethany just shakes her head and Nikki nods understandingly as Brody takes Bethany’s hand.
Nikki Peltier: She mentioned Mama, didn’t she?
Bethany manages a nod and Brody squeezes her hand. He starts to stand up but Nikki catches him by the arm, shaking her head.
Nikki Peltier: Don’t…
Before he can say anything, Nikki nods to Bethany.
Nikki Peltier: She needs you more right now than Ashley needs an asskicking. There’ll be time for that later…
Brody nods as the two of them go back to attending to Bethany.
Nikki Peltier: We’re here, Bethy.
Brody nods his agreement.
Brody Montgomery: It’s gonna be ok, Babe.

A camera opens on a backyard, Bethany Kenyon standing next to an old playhouse that looks like it used to look like the Barbie Dreamhouse come to life but now appears to be in need of repair and paint job.
Bethany Kenyon: You used to love it here…
She moves over to the wooden structure and runs her hand over the door.
Bethany Kenyon: You remember when Daddy built us this, Ash? He was so proud of himself because he’d built it for us all by himself. Got our neighbor, Mr. Cantrell, to help him haul all the stuff in and then let Khary help him paint it just right.
Her finger traces the paint to a crack near the window and she shakes her head sadly at the state of their old stomping grounds.
Bethany Kenyon: God, Dorian would just cry at the shape it’s in, probably be able to tell us all the things Daddy got wrong.
She pauses, nodding slowly.
Bethany Kenyon: He’s not a bad guy, our World Champion, loves his woodworking…
Running her hand over the wall, she continues to walk around the playhouse
Bethany Kenyon: You used to love playing in this house. Loved it when Mama managed to get that Power Wheels Corvette so you could play Barbie for real here with me and the other girls.
She smiles nodding sadly.
Bethany Kenyon: I did too. I loved coming out here, even after Mama…
Trailing off, Bethany looks away from the camera and starts back further in the yard.
Bethany Kenyon: We always had each other, no matter what. Thick and thin, we were always there for each other.
She keeps walking until she comes upon a giant covered area with chopped wood stacked up inside it.
Bethany Kenyon: And now you’ve gone and thrown that all away over what seems like nothing.
Bethany looks to the ground and then turns to face the camera.
Bethany Kenyon: This…
She points to the stacks of wood.
Bethany Kenyon: This is where this fight really belongs, Ash. Here by the woodshed where every so often, one of us would get a whipping. You want to fight me, come after me, because I paid attention to everyone but you… because you feel like we treated you wrong…
Sighing heavily, bethany swallows and stares into the camera.
Bethany Kenyon: Ash, the only one who ever thought you weren’t good enough for Arsenal was you! YOU were the one who always said you felt like a tag-along, not us. YOU were the one who felt like you could never do well enough to get the attention you deserved, well how much more attention do you need?
Looking to the ground again, Bethany just shakes her head in disbelief.
Bethany Kenyon: We were the best tag team in UWA and honestly, i never thought about doing anything else until they booked us separately and you beat Vince Jones on your own. When you did that, i couldn’t have been prouder of you if i tried! There you were, my little sister, the one who was always worried she didn’t measure up, taking everything Vince Jones could throw at her and giving it right back until he folded and you won!
She starts to nod and then looks back into the camera.
Bethany Kenyon: I would have been happy being in that tag team with you forever, Ash, but you were the one who went and got yourself other priorities and responsibilities but you know what, i didn’t feel abandoned because I knew it was what you needed to do. You needed to prove to everybody and to yourself that you could do it without me.
She pauses and then nods solemnly.
Bethany Kenyon: And you did it! Now I’m sorry if me going out on my own and winning the World Title made you feel like I upstaged you but you were the one who left the team first, Ash, not me.
Taking in the sight of the woodshed and the playhouse, Bethany folds her arms momentarily.
Bethany Kenyon: So now here we are, about to go at it in a fight I never wanted but that you’ve seemingly been getting ready to have for years and nominally, it’s about championships and standing in UWA. If you win, you’re the longest reigning champion and you’ve beaten your third main eventer one on one in this run and nobody can take that away from you. You’ll put yourself into a spot where you can practically demand to get a shot at whoever the World Champion is and people will listen…
She pauses, almost wanting to shake her head.
Bethany Kenyon: And if I win, I become something this company has never seen before, somebody who has won the three highest championships in the company. I’ll be, as has been pointed out in certain circles, the first “Triple Crown” winner in UWA history and I’ll have knocked you off your perch to do it.
Her arms drop and she glares into the camera.
Bethany Kenyon: But let’s cut the bullshit right here, right now because this isn’t about championships and it isn’t about prestige or professional standing. This is about you feeling inadequate and me needing to punish you for taking it out on me! This is about you needing more and more attention knowing it’ll never be enough and me needing to take you down here to the woodshed to knock that shit out of you! This is about you not having the balls to come to me and say these things to my face like a grown ass woman and me having to show you what a grown ass woman fucking looks like!
She turns and nods to the stacks of wood.
Bethany Kenyon: We’re going down here to the woodshed, Ash, and I already cut the switch!
