Watching people you know and respect crash into the abyss is never an easy thing to accept. When those people are also the ones you consider family, it’s even harder. Your world swirls around you and makes it feel like everything is gonna crash into hell any second. For some people, this is an excuse to lash out and become violent to anybody that happens to be handy. For others, it’s an excuse to become self-destructive in some way, either by inflicting actual physical pain or by imbibing something to such a degree there is no doubt about what that person is attempting to do. For Bethany Kenyon, it means it’s time to take a step back and really take it all in…
She walks into St. Louis Cathedral and takes a seat in the last pew on the right, bowing her head reverently as she does so. A minute later, her boyfriend, Broderick Montgomery, III, walks in and looks around the place. As Bethany remains seated, Brody makes his way around to the opposite end of the pew and comes in next to her.
Brody Montgomery: Beautiful place…
Bethany barely nods.
Bethany Kenyon: One of the oldest in America, been a church here since 1720…
Brody nods and takes in the scenery while Bethany’s head remains bowed in reverent observance.
Brody Montgomery: Is this…
Bethany looks up and crosses herself.
Bethany Kenyon: I’m Catholic, yes, don’t come to mass as often as I probably should. Père Antoine would probably be displeased with me…
Brody frowns.
Brody Montgomery: He a priest?
Bethany nods.
Bethany Kenyon: The one the alley’s named after. Supposedly, if you walk that alley early enough in the morning you’ll see him. Midnight Mass on Christmas you can see him just off to the left of the altar holding a candle like he’s watching over everyone even in the afterlife…
Not wanting to start an argument, Brody just nods.
Brody Montgomery: Haunted…
Bethany nods.
Bethany Kenyon: It is New Orleans, after all.
She smiles, patting his hand.
Bethany Kenyon: Thanks for coming here with me. I know you aren’t exactly big on this stuff…
Brody shrugs as if this is nothing.
Brody Montgomery: If it’s important to you…
She nods and then stands up.
Bethany Kenyon: Come on, I’ll show you why I really come here.
He stands and follows her outside and around to the cemetery area. A few minutes in and they come to the headstone labeled “Selina Katt Kenyon”
Bethany Kenyon: I come to talk to her…
Brody eyes the marker and nods, understanding seemingly flooding him on the spot.
Brody Montgomery: Your mother…
Bethany nods, looking around and taking in a deep breath of the surrounding air as if it’s the greatest thing she’s ever experienced.
Bethany Kenyon: Mama loved this place. Came to mass like clockwork until she got sick and then the Church came to her. Nikki’s mama’s a couple rows over, but Nikki’s kind of like me about it. She comes when the need strikes…
As she and Brody stand there in silence for a few seconds, a familiar voice rings out, one filled with anger and resentment.
Voice: Spose I should turn around and go kill some time while I wait my turn…
Bethany and Brody turn to see her younger sister, UWA North American Champion Ashley Kenyon standing there looking almost out out that Bethany and Brody are here already.
Ashley Kenyon: Somehow I knew I should have waited…
Bethany starts to move towards her but Ashley raises a hand to stop her.
Ashley Kenyon: Don’t…
Bethany’s face falls at the tone of voice coming from her sister.
Bethany Kenyon: Ash…
Ashley shakes her head, cutting her sister off before she can even finish the thought.
Ashley Kenyon: Not ready to make nice yet…
Brody takes a step back, trying to stay out of the sisters’ quarrel no matter how much he’d really like to do the opposite.
Bethany Kenyon: Not even for Mama?
Ashley nods to the marker ahead of them.
Ashley Kenyon: Mama’s the only reason I’m standing way over here.
Bethany can’t believe her ears.
Bethany Kenyon: Ash, what…?
Ashley shakes her head and raises a hand to stop her sister from finishing the question again.
Ashley Kenyon: You already know the answer, don’t insult the bunch of us by asking a stupid question! I’m gonna go inside and just…
Ashley grits and then grinds her teeth for a second as the words almost make her choke on the bile behind the sentiment.
Ashley Kenyon: Wait my turn…
She turns and walks off, leaving Bethany standing there alone with Brody. Bethany bows her head again, trying to decide if she wants to scream, cry, hit something or a bit of all three. After a few seconds, she raises her head and nods.
Bethany Kenyon: I’m sorry you had to see that…
Brody hugs her tenderly.
Brody Montgomery: It happens.
Bethany shakes her head even as he holds her.
Bethany Kenyon: She’s been mad ever since that job that pissed you off, the one where I came home high and you were still sober enough to notice…
Brody kisses the top of her head.
Brody Montgomery: You explained yourself and, as I recall, it wasn’t an experience you wanted to run out and re-live.
Bethany nods slowly.
Bethany Kenyon: Never before… never again…
Brody smiles proudly.
Brody Montgomery: That’s what I like to hear. That’s not a road you need to be going down.
She nods, a single tear rolling down her cheek.
Bethany Kenyon: It’s not one I expected to need to worry about with everybody as much as I do…
Brody nods as she turns to face her mother’s grave.
Brody Montgomery: Everybody has demons, Beth.
Bethany nods as she kneels down, bowing her head again.
Bethany Kenyon: Some of us just hide them better, I know. Jezzy says that about us all the time.
Shaking her head, she squeezes her eyes shut.
Bethany Kenyon: What am I gonna do, Mama?
Brody starts to answer but stops himself, backing up to give Bethany her space.
Bethany Kenyon: What am I gonna do?
Brody steps back even further and Bethany nods to the marker.
Bethany Kenyon: My boyfriend drinks too much and pops pills to kill the pain that’s never going away and it’s only gotten worse since he got suspended. My best friend tried to drink herself into oblivion because she thought she’d walked in on her girlfriend falling off the wagon and blew up at her.
She pauses, taking a deep breath.
Bethany Kenyon: Her girlfriend, who used to be my girlfriend, almost killed herself because of it. Their boyfriend found her on the floor after she’d taken way too much cocaine…
Pausing again, she shrugs, acknowledging a side point.
Bethany Kenyon: At least I hope it was just coke!
Swallowing everything back before she makes herself sick, Bethany sits back a little, her eyes opening upon the name across the marker.
Bethany Kenyon: Ash refuses to talk to any of us she thinks we’re finally gonna get rid of her...
She shakes her head, fighting back the tears.
Bethany Kenyon: What am I gonna do, Mama?
Shaking her head again, Bethany stands up and crosses herself again before tapping the top of the marker.
Bethany Kenyon: I love you, Mama. I wish you were here to tell me how to fix everything…
As she slowly turns around she finds a camera crew standing there next to Brody.
Bethany Kenyon: How long have they been there?
Brody shrugs apologetically.
Brody Montgomery: About the time you hit your knees.
Bethany nods slowly.
Bethany Kenyon: So you all heard everything?
Brody shrugs.
Brody Montgomery: No, just watched you kneeling in front of a grave.
Bethany nods sadly, taking a deep breath to prepare herself.
Bethany Kenyon: Do they need to be here now?
Brody turns to them and starts to shoo them off when Bethany raises a hand to stop him.
Bethany Kenyon: No wait… it’s not their fault. They’re just doing a job.
She pauses, thinking things over.
Bethany Kenyon: Brody, gimme a sec here, will ya? Or, will Oliver not care if you interview me even though you’ve been suspended for two months?
Brody chuckles.
Brody Montgomery: Ask me if I care?
Bethany nods.
Bethany Kenyon: Ok, you’re here anyway and they DID come to us…
Brody smiles approvingly.
Brody Montgomery: That’s my girl!
Bethany shrugs resignedly and nods to the camera.
Bethany Kenyon: Ok, let’s get this… going…
Brody grins and steps behind the camera.
Brody Montgomery: So, how does it feel to be the hottest thing on two legs and the sexiest World Champion ever?
Bethany doesn’t seem to find this funny at all.
Bethany Kenyon: Brody…
Brody shrugs behind the camera.
Brody Montgomery: What? How often do I get the chance to have a little fun like this?
Bethany crosses her arms and brody can’t help but chuckle again.
Brody Montgomery: God, you’re beautiful when you’re annoyed!
Bethany nods to him like he knows he’s gonna get it later.
Bethany Kenyon: Oh, just when I’m annoyed, huh?
Brody chuckles again.
Brody Montgomery: Ok, seriously, how does it feel to be the UWA World Champion?
Bethany’s arms fall to her sides and she stares forward, though her eyes slowly lower while she ponders this question. Brody watches the expression on her face and the smile slowly fades off his face.
Brody Montgomery: Beth?
She nods and her eyes love her gaze back up to the Brody and then camera.
Bethany Kenyon: It’s not what I thought it would be.
She lets her eyes drift downward again as Brody frowns in confusion.
Brody Montgomery: In what way?
Bethany takes a deep breath as the thoughts all seem to start crashing into each other at once.
Bethany Kenyon: When I started wrestling, I didn’t think I would ever get here and, in all honesty, that was ok at the time. That means I got into the sport for the wrong reasons, I know, but at the time, I just wanted to see if I could do it, have a little fun with my friends and they were gonna pay us to do that. Being the best never entered my mind because I thought it would be like everything else we’d ever done as a group, it’d be a lark and something we did a couple of times or just on the weekends and eventually we’d get bored and move on but…
Shaking her head, the surprise is evident even on her face.
Bethany Kenyon: That’s not what happened at all. We found we loved it and then it became about having fun, seeing how good we could be and making the team with Ash the best team we could be. So we came to UWA, that was the whole point and that’s why we didn’t really complain when the championships had tournaments that were set-up without us in it. We were never supposed to be singles champions, we were supposed to be the best team and so we waited for that. Then we got that chance, the four-way with Aerynn in the midst of all the shit with the Children and we all got that taste of, hey, maybe I CAN be that person… you know what I mean?
Brody nods from behind the camera.
Brody Montgomery: Yeah… I do…
Bethany nods solemnly.
Bethany Kenyon: We made more friends, we stood tall, shit happened and…
She starts to shake her head again and ends up just staring off vacantly to the left.
Bethany Kenyon: Being the Champion destroyed Aerynn. She fought her damndest to be the best, the benchmark for the whole company and having that target painted on her drove her further and further into an abyss she couldn’t climb out of. She seemingly lived that movie quote, “Madness is like gravity, all it takes is a little push.” She got pushed… and pushed… and pushed… until madness was all she had left and it broke her wide open.
She pauses, her eyes narrowing as she starts to look to the right instead.
Bethany Kenyon: Much as I hate to say, it destroyed Jezzy too. She was cooking some before that but when she won, she broke under the weight of everything that had gotten her to that point. She snapped on Aerynn, started drinking like it was an Olympic event and stopped doing coke to have fun…
Her tongue slowly traces her lips as her breath seemingly catches in her throat.
Bethany Kenyon: She needed it...
Her gaze moves back to the camera.
Bethany Kenyon: And now it looks like it’s destroyed Sentinel and he doesn’t even have it yet. The man that was in his last video, I don’t know who that was, but it was not the guy who had my back the other day in a warehouse with bullets flying around! He’s broken down the middle and it seems like it’s all because he’s decided being the Champion really means so much, that everything else is secondary whether it’s friends, brothers, family, his wife, his child…
Shaking her head, Bethany looks dead into the camera, almost pleading for something.
Bethany Kenyon: And I don’t know if I should scream to the heavens, stomp my feet or what. I just want to scream at everybody, “what the fuck is going on?” I used to be nervous and scared about getting into the ring for this match because Sentinel is a really big guy and fully capable of taking me apart if he really decides he wants to, but now…
She looks around the area, from the camera to Brody to the Cathedral and then to the sky.
Bethany Kenyon: Now I wanna beg whoever’s listening, please…
She raises her arms, falling to her knees.
Bethany Kenyon: Please don’t let that be me!
Her arms drop to her sides as she closes her eyes, her head drooping forward almost into prayer.
Bethany Kenyon: Please don’t let that be me…
She squeezes her hands into fists for a second and then manages to look up again.
Bethany Kenyon: Ashley’s going off the deep end, Jeszika’s already there, Aerynn plunged in and never came back, Kyle Travis made himself delusional, Fraser Freeman lost himself chasing a title and now Sentinel has gone stark raving mad and all because of something I thought was supposed to make you have a sense of pride! This was supposed to be the mark of achievement, not the damn Mark of Cain! So you ask me, how does it feel to be Champion?
She shrugs sadly.
Bethany Kenyon: And I say it scares the shit out of me because I don’t want to be them! Two weeks ago, Sentinel was an honorable man willing to do anything to prove he was still that guy and now…
She shakes her head, her eyes moistening.
Bethany Kenyon: Now he makes me question what any of us were thinking ever trying this in the first place!
She pauses, fighting back tears.
Bethany Kenyon: I was afraid of Sentinel, deathly afraid of him and now I’m way more afraid of becoming… that!
Unable to stop them, she looks to her boyfriend as the tears start up in earnest.
Bethany Kenyon: It wasn’t supposed to be like this, Brody…
Her chin drops to chest as she starts sobbing.
Bethany Kenyon: It wasn’t supposed to be like this…
Brody nods and shoves the camera aside, rushing over to her and catching her as she starts to fall over.
She walks into St. Louis Cathedral and takes a seat in the last pew on the right, bowing her head reverently as she does so.
