Sitting in her living room, Bethany Kenyon, glances down at her cell phone while Bitch Slap plays on the television in front of her. Sitting in the chair to her immediate left is her friend, and for the last month or so, roommate, Jeszika Gautier, who is watching the movie, one of their favorites, intently. As the movie progresses, Bethany calls up the company website and stares at the tiny screen.
Bethany Kenyon: Have you looked at the card for this show?
Jeszika shakes her head.
Jeszika Gautier: Not yet, is it up now?
Bethany nods.
Bethany Kenyon: You’re not gonna like it.
Jeszika Gautier: I'm not?
She shuffles over.
Jeszika Gautier: Let me see...
Bethany shows the phone.
Bethany Kenyon: You’re refereeing the main event, Joshua and Aerynn.
Jeszika gapes.
Jeszika Gautier: You've got to be fucking kidding me...
Bethany shakes her head.
Bethany Kenyon: Afraid not…
She trails off.
Bethany Kenyon: Who keeps doing…
She shakes her head, looking both sad and angry.
Bethany Kenyon: God help us...
Jeszika Gautier: God can't help us, B... We're damned remember?
She shakes her head.
Jeszika Gautier: Fate conspires...
She looks away.
Jeszika Gautier: I don't know if I want to do this.... I can't guarantee that I'll keep my hands off either of them... Best just to stand back and let them fight till the death…
Bethany shakes her head.
Bethany Kenyon: God… this is…
Suddenly, her phone starts ringing.
Bethany Kenyon: Oh God, tell me it’s not bad n…
Looking down, her jaw drops. She presses the button and holds the phone to her ear.
Bethany Kenyon: Carrie?
She nods and presses another button.
Bethany Kenyon: Speaker.
Carrie’s voice comes over the line.
Carrie Winter: Are you both there?
Jeszika Gautier: Yep I'm here too, what’s up, Carrie?
Carrie Winter: I’m ready to talk… to both of you. Can you meet me some place?
Jeszika Gautier: I'm happy to... But this is yours and B's story really...
Carrie’s voice comes back again.
Carrie Winter: I need to talk to both of you.
Jeszika Gautier: Ok well like I said, I'm happy to. B, what about you?
Bethany nods.
Bethany Kenyon: Where and when?
Carrie Winter: I’m at Prey.
Jeszika Gautier: We'll be there as soon as we can.
Carrie’s voice comes back sounding worried.
Carrie Winter: Ok.
The call ends and Bethany stares at the phone.
Bethany Kenyon: This doesn’t sound like a happy occasion…
Jeszika sighs.
Jeszika Gautier: Not everything we do in life is happy... I know that for sure…
Bethany nods, still staring at the phone.
Bethany Kenyon: Do you think she’s dumping me for good?
Jeszika Gautier: She wouldn’t be calling us both there for that.
Pulling herself away from the phone, Bethany turns to look at Jeszika.
Bethany Kenyon: What WOULD she be calling us both for?
Jeszika Gautier: To apologize maybe?
Bethany nods slowly, pondering this.
Bethany Kenyon: I suppose we should go then.
Jeszika Gautier: Yeah, we should.
Fifteen minutes later, the two walk into Prey. As they step inside, Stephanie Tompkins sees them and nods before pointing to the back room. Bethany and Jeszika make their way to Carrie’s room and knock on the door. It opens and Carrie motions them into her apartment.
Carrie Winter: Thanks for coming.
Bethany nods as she and Jeszika sit down on Carrie’s couch. Carrie walks over from the door to a chair sitting across from the couch.
Bethany Kenyon: Of course…
Jeszika Gautier: Least we could do. So what’s up?
Carrie swallows hard.
Carrie Winter: First off, I want to say I’m sorry I took so long to talk after what happened.
She pauses.
Carrie Winter: Second, I wanna ask… if you know, how is Melissa? I tried to call her and didn’t get an answer.
Jeszika looks down.
Jeszika Gautier: She and I... We're...
She swallows.
Jeszika Gautier: She's broke things off…
Carrie nods, looking down at the floor.
Carrie Winter: Is… is that my fault? Because I didn’t… do more?
Jeszika shakes her head.
Jeszika Gautier: No ones fault but my own... and that asshole, Joshua's…
Carrie manages to look up into Jeszika’s eyes.
Carrie Winter: I... I could have... should have done more…
She trails off, the guilt, shame and fear obvious in her voice.
Carrie Winter: I should have been able to fight more…
Jeszika shakes her head.
Jeszika Gautier: Against five huge men? Even I couldn’t have beaten those odds, Carrie...
She looks Carrie dead in the eyes.
Jeszika Gautier: All is forgiven Carrie, don't let what he has done eat away at you like this.
Carrie nods slowly.
Carrie Winter: Next, I need to know…
She grits her teeth like this question is making her feel even more ashamed.
Carrie Winter: Is there anything between you two?
Bethany’s jaw drops.
Bethany Kenyon: Is there…
Jeszika's jaw drops too.
Jeszika Gautier: Between us two? Me and Bethany?
Carrie nods.
Carrie Winter: Yes…
Bethany shakes her head.
Bethany Kenyon: No…
She pauses, taking a deep breath.
Bethany Kenyon: I mean, at one time, yes but now, I think we love each other more like sisters.
Jeszika Gautier: Yeah, at one time there was and could have been a full blown relationship had we all been open to it at the time, but that was long time ago now. And my heart belongs to another, who sadly wants nothing to do with me.
Carrie nods, seemingly relaxing a little.
Carrie Winter: What about Brody?
Before anyone else can say anything, Carrie nods slowly again.
Carrie Winter: He came to see me…
Jeszika shakes her head
Jeszika Gautier: We've finalized our divorce. Is all done with him.
The her second sentence sets in.
Jeszika Gautier: He what?
Carrie Winter: He came to see me..
She nods to Bethany.
Carrie Winter: About you.
Jeszika cocks her head.
Jeszika Gautier: Ok... I'm staying out of this convo... Ex-wife and all…
Still looking at Bethany, Carrie nods understandingly at Jeszika’s answer.
Carrie Winter: He just wanted me not to hold that against you.
Jeszika Gautier: I see.
Carrie glances at the door.
Carrie Winter: You guys want a drink? Maybe somethin’ else too?
Bethany smiles.
Bethany Kenyon: So we’re…
Carrie Winter: Only if you wanna…
Jeszika smiles.
Jeszika Gautier: Well, I for one could definitely use some drink and this something else you speak of.
Carrie nods, standing up. Bethany follows and starts to take Carrie’s hand but stops short. Carrie grins.
Carrie Winter: I don’t think she’ll mind, Beth.
Jeszika Gautier: Hey, I got no problems. Hell make out and it won’t even bother me. Would make me happy actually, cause it will mean you're both happy.
Carrie beams.
Carrie Winter: See…
Bethany nods before kissing Carrie passionately.
Bethany Kenyon: I love you, Carrie. God, I’ve missed you!
Carrie smiles.
Carrie Winter: I missed you too.
She motions at the door.
Carrie Winter: Come on…
The three of them step through the door and walk into the bar. A few minutes later, three glasses and three small vials have been doled out.
Carrie Winter: Here’s to us!
Jeszika Gautier: Here's to us indeed.
She takes a big mouthful, followed quickly by another.
Jeszika Gautier: Here's to the future, whatever it brings and whatever bitch I have to got through to get vengeance.
Carrie gets her a refill as the vials open. The contents are quickly indulged in as Carrie kisses Bethany. Jeszika sniffs, rubbing her nose as she watches her friends coming back together.
Bethany Kenyon: Don’t do it all at once, Jez…
Carrie chuckles.
Carrie Winter: Always the mother hen…
Jeszika Gautier: Worried I'll pass out again are you, B?
Bethany shrugs.
Bethany Kenyon: Just concerned is all.
Jeszika Gautier: You got nothing to worry about, B... I can handle myself...
She downs the last of her glass.
Jeszika Gautier: Anyone else want another round?
Carrie nods to Stephanie who quickly gets them another bottle and some shot glasses.
Carrie Winter: Line ‘em up!
Jeszika Gautier: Now that’s what I'm talking about.
Carrie chuckles as they spend the next few hours slowly enjoying the whole bottle. As they ponder another, a crewcut blonde fratboy in a polo shirt comes walking up to Jeszika.
Fratboy: [color-beige]Mmm… hey Baby… whatcha say ya make one with me?
Jeszika Gautier: Not a chance, Buddy.
She says rolling her eyes before turning back to her friends.
Fratboy: [color-beige]Hey, Bitch, I'm talking to you... what are ya too good for it?
Jeszika sighs irritatedly, before turning around to glare at the guy.
Jeszika Gautier: You got a problem if I am too good for you?
Fratboy: [color-beige]You know you want it...
He leans in and kisses her on the lips. Jeszika's eyes go wide and she shoves the guy off her before turning on him with a feral growl. Before anyone can stop her she punches the guy square in the jaw. When he falls to the ground, she mounts him and starts raining down punch after punch to the guys face.
Jeszika Gautier: Why... DOn't... Guys... Like... You... Take.... A God... Damned... Hint!!!!
Each word is punctuated with a punch.Bethany tackles her quickly.
Bethany Kenyon: Jezzy, stop, you're gonna kill him...
Jeszika glares at her for a second looking like she might punch her too, before she calms down.
Jeszika Gautier: Bastard asked for it! Laying him god damn fucken mouth on me....
She wipes her mouth with the back of her hand.
Jeszika Gautier: Disgusting fucking male pig!!!!!
The frat boy sits up.
Fratboy: [color-beige]You crazy bitch, no wonder you're all alone!
Bethany holds her back as the guy's friends come over and drag him away. Jeszika screams out again ready to launch at him again, but Bethany holds her back.
Jeszika Gautier: Fucking asswipe! How dare he!!!! He doesn’t even know the slightest thing about me!!!
Bethany Kenyon: Exactly... if he did, he'd never have done that...
Jeszika Gautier: Doubt it, prob would have still done it, drunk ass fucking moron!!!
Carrie shakes her head.
Carrie Winter: What a douchebag...
Jeszika Gautier: Its men like him that rape poor women like us... I ought to castrate him before he hurts the wrong girl.... Uses her and casts her aside like a used diaper...
Carrie Winter: At least he didn't ask about my movies...
Bethany nods.
Bethany Kenyon: Jezzy probably WOULD have killed him then.
Jeszika Gautier: Fuck yeah I would have!
Bethany Kenyon: Does that happen often?
Carrie shrugs.
Carrie Winter: A couple of times a month maybe?
Jeszika Gautier: What? Me wanting to kill people? Or her movies getting mentioned?
Carrie shakes her head.
Carrie Winter: People asking about the movies and if that's really me.
Jeszika Gautier: Bastards...
Carrie shrugs as if she wants everyone to think it’s no big deal.
Carrie Winter: Stephanie tends to give them the evil eye and if jonas is around, they get thrown out.
Jeszika Gautier: SO they should.
Worried, Bethany taps Jeszika’s arm.
Bethany Kenyon: Come on... we should get you home.
Jeszika Gautier: Probably a good idea, or someone gonna get decked again...
Carrie walks over and helps them both up before kissing Bethany.
Carrie Winter: Call me?
Bethany grins.
Bethany Kenyon: Of course.
Jeszika smiles, happy to see an exchange like this. But a part of her feels sad, knowing she doesn’t have this anymore. Bethany nods to Jeszika and then to Carrie. Deciding to just go with it, Carrie nods back and makes sure it’s ok with her co-workers.
Bethany Kenyon: Come on…
Jeszika follows her and the three of them leave the bar for the night.
- - - - - - -
Bethany Kenyon: Kyle Travis and Sang Réal…
She nods slowly before shrugging slightly as the webcam on her laptop opens upon her in her own bedroom at home in New Orleans.
Bethany Kenyon: I know a lot of people are gonna look and say this is nothing, it doesn’t matter and will never amount to anything because of Kyle Travis’ history and the fact that in the last two months, none of these three men had made much noise until Raising Hell but…
She shrugs again, glancing back at the room to her right. The room where Carrie Winter and Jeszika Gautier are currently watching Repo: The Genetic Opera for the 567,000the time.
Bethany Kenyon: It’s still three guys with championship pedigrees who’ve all shown they CAN go when they aren’t too busy being worried about stupid crap that truly doesn’t matter. Is it possible it won’t amount to anything?
Nodding, Bethany stares at a picture of the threesome on her computer screen.
Bethany Kenyon: Yeah, it’s possible. You never know what’s gonna happen when you add three egos of that caliber together in the same group. Sometimes they come together and dominate the world the way the original Four Horsemen did and sometimes it falls apart because the egos can’t stand not being number one and so crash into each other trying too hard to not be the number two guy that number one steps on to get to the top.
Shaking her head at the picture, Bethany, shrugs for the camera.
Bethany Kenyon: The problem comes in that they accuse people of having missed the point when, let’s face it, Kyle Travis has made a career lately of missing the point. In NEW, he WAS exactly what he claims he hates. He was a chosen one, hand picked for the top stable by a man later revealed to be the owner of the company in Randy Altzer. Randy spread the word that Kyle was a guy to be watched, a guy that would soon be a big name. He was expected to do things the way guys like Eric Donavan and Tombstone did upon arrival there, just flash his awesome talent, win and make himself just the latest member of that group to be a big star and huge champion there. How could he not, wasn’t he coming in with a huge pedigree and a long list of accomplishments?
She nods knowing this is true.
Bethany Kenyon: The only problem was the old Kyle Travis, the one who had earned that long list of accomplishments, did not arrive. In his place was a man of astounding talent, battle tested and scarred, who seemed to have a lost a step, probably because of those battle scars he sported. He underachieved and when that happens between two men as proud as Kyle and Randy Altzer, things are bound to go badly and of course they did. Kyle was thrown out of the group and promptly started accusing the company of holding him back, despite the fact that he was still being handed opportunities to be in matches with the biggest stars that company had to offer culminating in a world championship opportunity not a month before he quit that company.
Taking a deep breath, Bethany pauses and shakes her head sadly.
Bethany Kenyon: But more than the underachieving came the bitterness that he had allowed to seep inside. It colored everything and caused him to start making statements that were just so ludicrous in nature that people not only stopped taking him seriously, they openly began to ridicule him. he should have been a hero standing against Randy Altzer, the monster Hyde, the sellout Purity Solanas and the championship tag team thugs, the Wrecking Crew. Instead, he was seen as a hasbeen lashing out because he couldn’t take the failure, whether that was true or not. Nobody knew because nobody bothered to actually ask him. They simply waited with baited breath for him to make another statement, say something else they considered stupid, insane, retarded or whatever other derogatory term they could think of and Kyle, drowning in the depths of his own anger and bitterness, never disappointed them. He was say things like everyone praised Randy Altzer even though no one liked Randy, including his own stable of thugs. They all made fun of him behind his back almost as much as people made fun of Kyle for getting one of his opponent’s genders wrong in that very world title match he always said he wanted and that he claimed they would never give him.
She points almost accusingly into the camera.
Bethany Kenyon: You SHOULD have been the biggest hero that place had ever seen, Kyle, but you chose not to be and then wondered why no one gave you the respect you thought you were due as a legend. Then you came here, the people in charge gave instructions that what happened in NEW was not to be repeated here. You were handed a spot near the top of the card and when it came time to prove you deserved it, the same thing happened. You allowed things to cloud your vision and now you, Murphy and Krown are coming to a fight that already happened!
She looks down at the screen and the list of people they’ve mentioned over and over and over again.
Bethany Kenyon: You run down this list and you come off like those people who go crazy every time a wrestler dies and they have their list of wrestlers who died at a relatively young age and imply the entire list was because of drugs said wrestlers ingested. Your list includes people who are not here for various reasons. Pauly went back to Belfast for personal reasons, the Sentinel was attacked and put on the shelf by Joshua McBride. They could come back tomorrow if the opportunity arose. Nick Daniels left because of an injury caused by McBride. Rina Kirilos has a history of abandoning jobs and never really showed up. Everyone else on that list of yours was given the chance and booked until they simply stopped showing up. Tag teams don’t get booked here much because those in charge simply dislike the art form and don’t believe in tag teams.
She pauses and nods slightly.
Bethany Kenyon: But for the sake of argument, let’s say you’re right and all of these people were run off by Joshua McBride.
She glares into the camera.
Bethany Kenyon: Where were all of you when Joshua McBride was running them off? When they came for Sentinel, Daniels, Rina, the Knights, Aerynn Donnelly, us, and everybody else, where were you? All you ever did was sit on the sidelines and bitch that none of us were paying any attention to you and now you have the gall to say you’re gonna go to war to make a change that already happened?
She nods as if the answer is perfectly clear to everyone else.
Bethany Kenyon: McBride lost, Oliver Georgio is no longer stuck in his grasp and can make changes so what are your excuses gonna be now when you don’t get exactly what you want? Kyle Travis, you have been whining for two years now that people aren’t treating you fairly, but you’ve always been exactly what you claim to hate! You were picked for greatness in NEW and you fucked it up yourself and you were picked for greatness here only to get outshone by others and it’s driving you crazy! The saddest part is that people want to like all of you guys! they want to like Kyle Travis and be like, look, there’s a legendary example to follow, the only problem is you start spouting off things that make you sound arrogant and insane and kill your own legend and Sang Réal?
She shrugs almost sadly and yet still angrily.
Bethany Kenyon: You guys keep claiming you want to stand on your own two feet but every time you open your mouths, you remind people you’re treading off of somebody else’s name and somebody else’s accomplishments and now you’re hitching your wagons to yet more stuff from the past that doesn’t mean a damn thing for you now. You guys were handed a gift that nobody else was given in the form of a commentary spot and yet you have the balls to say you’ve been excluded.
She shakes her head in disbelief.
Bethany Kenyon: We needed guys like you, guys who are talented and can go in that war that was going on for the last four months and you didn’t bother to even look until it was over and you noticed nobody was talking about you anymore! Well you know how you fix that problem? You get off your asses, you stop beating random points that don’t mean anything into the ground until and you fight before the fight is over! nobody respect the cowards who walk onto the battlefield after the fighting is over and right now, that’s all you three are!
She steps back, sadness and disappointment in her eyes.
Bethany Kenyon: I wish you were... what we all know you should be…
Bethany Kenyon: Have you looked at the card for this show?
Jeszika shakes her head.
Jeszika Gautier: Not yet, is it up now?
Bethany nods.
Bethany Kenyon: You’re not gonna like it.
