††† The Past †††
It had been months since she found herself walking into that fetish club. Liz's Master, whom Danielle came to finally know as Mister Black, brought her into their world. The world of Bondage & Discipline, Dominance & Submission and Sadism & Masochism.
It was a whole new world for her. And she was still trying to figure everything out. There were so many rules to follow when it came to the BDSM lifestyle. When she wasn't working with her patients, she was learning everything she could about the lifestyle. Hell, even the performance artists in the lifestyle were ones that brought a certain type of revelation and knowledge to her.
After months of gaining knowledge, she decided to take a trip to visit an old friend from her medical school days.
The town of Porcelain Falls was one of those “creepy” towns you hear about in a movie or in a book. At least that's what her first thoughts were when she reached the outside edge of town. She looked at her GPS to make sure the directions were correct. “Perfect.”, she said to herself as she looked back to the road.
Fifteen minutes later, she was pulling into one of the small town's local stores and headed inside.
Once inside, she looked around. Gaze shifting here and there to take in the interior before she turned and headed back towards the coolers. After grabbing a can of RedBull, she then headed to the liquor section. As she stood there browsing through the various (though seriously lacking) stock, she pulled out her cell phone to call her friend.
“Hey, what do you want to drink?”, slight pause. “No, dip.. What do you want to really drink?”
She stood there a moment while she got the answer to her question. “Got it. See you soon.”
After hanging up the phone, she opened the cooler door and grabbed up four bottles of liquor. She then turned and headed to the counter and as she was setting her items on the counter, she smiled to the clerk, “Hi. Could you tell me the best way to get out to Old Hill Manor?”
“Old Hill Manor?”, the clerk asked. “What you want out there, Cher'?”
The clerk was an elderly man and it was very easy to tell that he'd lived in Porcelain Falls his entire life. That is, save for the obvious military tattoos that adorned his arms. As he rang up the items, he waited silently for Danielle to answer.
“Oh, my friend is Mister Devereaux's personal doctor.”, she replied to the answer.
The old man frowned at Danielle's answer. “You'd do best to stay away from the Devereaux's, Miss. Not wise to go up there.”, his tone, and words, held a sense of animosity in them.
Danielle pulled back a bit as she looked to him. “Uh, why?”
After ringing up Danielle's purchase, and she paid, the old man began bagging up the items. Only glancing up once, “The Devereaux's aren't nice people. Everyone has their secrets..”, he placed the last bottle in the bag and slid it towards Danielle. “Except the Devereaux's.. Have enough secrets to keep everyone in Porcelain Falls in the dark for centuries.”
“Erm, sure. I'll keep that in mind.”, said as she grabbed up the bags and headed out.
It was about thirty minutes later that she finally pulled up to the gates of Old Hill Manor. She leaned forward to look up at the house from the driver's seat. “Yeah, this place isn't creepy at all.”
Her tone was a bit sarcastic, but that didn't stop her from sliding her car window down and pressing the buzzer on the intercom. As she waited, she went over the old man's warning in her head.
And as she sat there, it was if by Fate, that her cell phone rang. “Hello?”

She was standing in the middle of a stage.
Only this time, she was dressed in an evening gown made entirely of mirrors. And the mask she wore, was gold. And with elaborate and elegant swirls and dips.
“'Regardless of the outcome of this match I've won.'
What have you won Mr. Travis?”
Her head tilted to the side slightly.
“You mocked a teddy bear..
You burnt down building of my first practice.
You attacked peons who I sacrifice to the darkness.”
She laughed softly.
“You shocked us with fireworks..
..And yet..
Where is your mighty victory?”
She held her arms out to indicate the empty space around her.
“All I see..
Is you've failed in your goal.”
She tilted her head the other way and gave him a mocking frown.
“Do you see My Lord?
No? Then you failed.”
She began to walk forward.
“You preach to the heavens..
..or hell, as it were..
..about how my Master failed to show up and accept your challenge.
And that's some great victory?”
She stopped. Eyes still on the camera.
“Have you not learned like the rest of the cretins in UWA learned?
We do things when HE decides.
Not you..
..HIM.”
She brought her hands together before her.
“He will face you when he see's fit.
Not before.
You are not in control here..
..HE is.”
She stood there for a few moments.
In silence.
“The sun has set on the Children of Nephilim..
No one fears us.
People didn't fear Joshua!
People didn't take Maiko seriously.”
She paused and smiled darkly.
“People are learning to fear MY forearm.
And Our Lord?
He has made his mark..
..even if you cannot see it.”
She started to move again.
The light catching the mirrors on her dress and reflecting shards of light all around her.
“Mr. Travis..
what makes you think he is hiding?
You claim that he is hiding behind a teddy bear..
..the teddy bear is a symbol.
The last remains of a innocent taken long ago.
Used to pay homage to them.
He doesn't hide.”
She shook her head.
“He confronts.
Even if you..
..again cannot see it.”
She brought a hand up to tap her index finger against the corner of her eye.
“You think Bene Elohim failed.
They did not fail, Kyle.
They succeed in what our Master wanted from them.
They tested your resolve.
They succeeded.”
She got to the edge of the stage and stopped.
Her back was to the camera.
“And me?
I shall test your commitment.
Win or lose.
Stand or fall.
I have been commanded to test your commitment.”
She turned, slowly, to look back at the camera.
“You cannot win..
For win or lose, Mister Travis..
..I get what I want.”
She walked back to the center of the stage.
The click of her heels were soft, yet distinct.
“See you compare the illusion that was Joshua in the wrong light, Kyle.
We do not act as they did..
Because it failed.
My Master punished Joshua for his failure..
..and his insolence.”
She laughed.
“We do not take..
Pillage and plunder because HE decrees it.
He has decreed that we watch..
..that we plan..
..that we wait.
Smarter action means less failure..
And he will no longer accept failure.”
Behind her television screens came to life.
On them were scenes of Kyle Travis losing to Aerynn Donnelly.
Another showed him losing to Broderick Montgomery.
And another still showed him losing to Jeszika.
“I understand failure is second nature to you, Mr. Travis..
..but to My Lord, it is not.”
She lifted a hand up and snapped her fingers and the scene on the screens changed.
Now, it was showing home video of Kyle Travis' home.
Of his wife walking out the front door.
Of his children playing in the back yard.
“Now Kyle I want to leave you with this.
You claimed to have won the war, but in the end..
..you have won nothing.”
She pulled her shoulders back and straightened her spine.
“I said I would stand and I have stood.
I said I would fight and I have fought.
I said I would hold true to his word..
..and I have preached his righteousness.”
She stood in the center of the stage.
A satisfied smile crossing her lips.
“He will reward me..
..so your opinion means nothing.
I have the only reward that matters..”
And suddenly, the stage goes dark.
"..His shining light.”
And then silence.
