Bethany Kenyon sits in the trainer’s room as she gets checked out following her loss to Sentinel. As she sits there, she looks up to see Nikki Peltier walking in.
Bethany Kenyon: Hey…
Nikki nods back.
Nikki Peltier: Hey…
Bethany sighs heavily.
Bethany Kenyon: Jezzy on her way home?
Nikki nods.
Nikki Peltier: Concussion likely, Kris is gonna meet her there.
Bethany nods approvingly.
Bethany Kenyon: That’s good… how was she?
Nikki shrugs.
Nikki Peltier: Kinda out of it, started to murmur about killing the guy.
Bethany nods slowly, pondering if this was good or bad.
Bethany Kenyon: You think she’ll go home and stay or…?
Nikki shrugs.
Nikki Peltier: I think it depends on if Kris is actually there when she gets there. If he’s on time, he might be able to get her to wait. If he’s not…
Bethany nods, a million thoughts racing through her mind.
Bethany Kenyon: Prey…
Nikki nods again.
Nikki Peltier: Ash might actually beat her to dthat as fast as she got out of here.
Bethany can’t help it as her chin droops to her chest.
Bethany Kenyon: I guess she really didn’t wanna talk…
Nikki sits down in a chair across from her friend.
Nikki Peltier: I guess not.
She holds out a hand to help Bethany stand up and steady herself next to the trainer’s table. Bethany smiles and then hugs her friend.
Nikki Peltier: We’re gonna need to have a talk with Ashley about everything at some point.
Bethany nods.
Bethany Kenyon: Are we gonna wanna have that talk with Jeszika too?
Nikki shrugs.
Nikki Peltier: We’re in trouble businesswise. I don’t know what we can realistically do with just the two of us. Jezzy’s falling, we can both see it coming. Carrie shouldn’t be an option because she’s already fallen herself and the last time we worked with her, bad things happened. Ashley’s pretty much making it clear that she’s taking a leave of absence at the very least…
She pauses as the two women make their way to the backdoor.
Nikki Peltier: At best she’s taking a break…
Bethany nods slowly, silently thanking Nikki for having already collected their bags from the dressing room.
Bethany Kenyon: And at worst, she’s leaving the company…
Her eyes close as she stops just outside the door.
Bethany Kenyon: And the team...
Nikki takes a deep breath and then hugs Bethany.
Nikki Peltier: We’re gonna be ok, Bethy.
Bethany swallows hard and hugs Nikki back.
Bethany Kenyon: Ok…
The two turn and walk over the car, ready to go home and be done with this place for a while.
Having spent the entire two days from the time the match ended until right now worrying about everyone but herself, Bethany Kenyon finally finds herself sitting on her own couch at home with her boyfriend, Brody Montgomery. Brody had expected this, it was one of the things he found to be the most cute and endearing about her, that she always put others before herself even if it meant she ended up the one hurt in the end. He knew that even with the loss to Sentinel and the World Championship, she’d spend her time worrying about what had happened with Jeszika Gautier and Cole Hunter and where Ashley had gotten off to moreso than what did and could have happened to her with Sentinel.
He had not been wrong…
Bethany had arrived home, hugged him and then marched to the couch. Brody didn’t have to ask what was on her mind, between the show and her friend and manager’s call, Brody had been ready. Now, sitting here on the couch, Bethany contemplates everything simultaneously and Brody simply waits to do what he can for her.
Brody Montgomery: You did great, Beth.
She nods, knowing exactly what he was doing and what he meant and yet still, not really feeling it herself. She looks up at him, almost pleading for answers she knows he doesn’t have.
Bethany Kenyon: What did I do wrong?
Brody braces himself. The onslaught was coming…
Brody Montgomery: With Sentinel?
Bethany starts to say yes, nodding but stops herself and poners. Was that really what she was asking him?
Bethany Kenyon: Everything...
Brody shakes his head, trying to be reassuring for her.
Brody Montgomery: With Sentinel, you did nothing wrong. You took the fight to him, like the Champion should have, like Aerynn used to and Jeszika did. Now, it's simply Sentinel's turn to try and carry the weight. We get to see now if he can or if it’ll bring him down like it has others before him.
He pauses, patting her hand lovingly.
Brody Montgomery: Sometime soon, you'll be the challenger and he'll be the one with everything to lose.
He pauses as she nods back to him.
Brody Montgomery: As for everything...
He takes a deep breath and then shakes her head.
Brody Montgomery: Nothing. You can't save everyone. Ash made her choice. She let jealousy cloud her judgement and Jeszika allowed rage to do the same to her.
Pausing again, he nods thoughtfully, turning back to her.
Brody Montgomery: Maybe you won after all.
Bethany frowns.
Bethany Kenyon: How do you figure that one?
Brody shrugs as if it should be obvious.
Brody Montgomery: You didn’t give in.
She stares at him, visibly confused.
Brody Montgomery: Jeszika gave in to rage, Ash to envy, myself to gluttony and Aerynn to wrath…
He can’t help but smile.
Brody Montgomery: Don’t you see, Beth? We’ve all let something get in the way, let some personal demon eat us alive. We’ve all been tainted…
He pauses long enough to nod to her.
Brody Montgomery: All of us except for you...
Bethany cocks her head, seemingly somewhat taken aback for the moment.
Bethany Kenyon: You wouldn't call it...
She swallows, searching for the right word and wishing it was a different one.
Bethany Kenyon: Pride...
She sits back, looking like she might even be admitting this to herself for the first time.
Bethany Kenyon: That I wanted to... maybe even thought I could? Or at least... had to try anyway...
Brody shrugs, grinning stupidly.
Brody Montgomery: Perhaps, but you wear it well.
He kisses her cheek and she blushes, still searching inside herself for answers that are not coming. Finally, after what seems like years, she nods to herself and looks down at her feet.
Bethany Kenyon: For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God...
Sighing like she wants to cry, Bethany shakes her head.
Bethany Kenyon: Ain't it the fuckin truth...
Brody shrugs.
Brody Montgomery: I don't try and live up to that. No human could. All I can do is try and be the best me I am now, as flawed as that may be. Ash and the others forgot that.
She nods as if that thought hadn’t entered her mind yet regarding her sister.
Bethany Kenyon: Oh God, I'm almost afraid to go looking for her. I know I won't like what I find when I get there and I know I don't want her to ask me to go there with her...
Brody raises her chin up gently with his finger.
Brody Montgomery: You have to be strong enough to stand true to who you are. It's easy to give in. Trust me. I know....giving in is simple. Staying who you are is hard. And if anyone is strong enough, it's you.
She nods and kisses him, lying back on the couch and letting him take her wherever he wants to go, all the while, a single thought reverberates around the back of her head.
“Yeah, but what I’m not?”
The next morning, Bethany wakes up early and walks through her house, that thought still there, screaming louder than ever. After about an hour of early morning activity including making coffee and jumping on a treadmill to try and make the voice in her head shut-up, she walks over to the computer and fires up the webcam. With it going, she sits down on her couch and nods.
Bethany Kenyon: Sentinel beat me…
She nods again in acknowledgement.
Bethany Kenyon: Congratulations, you won the match and in the process won the UWA World Championship and everything that comes with that. I’d say to savor it but I know that would be lost on you so…
She shrugs.
Bethany Kenyon: Do whatever it is you’re gonna anyway and remember, the target’s on your back now and we’ll see if you’re strong enough to stand the heat now that you’re the one in the middle of the kitchen!
She sighs, looking down at the floor
Bethany Kenyon: I’ve been asking myself since the end of that match and especially after finding out I was gonna have to get in the ring with Vince Jones again, am I just not strong enough for this? Am I just…
Trailing off, she sits up, almost falling back against the back of the couch, her gaze meeting the camera’s.
Bethany Kenyon: I know everybody looks at me and laughs because I’m the one that actually gives a shit. I know everybody looks and just shakes their head because they think I’m being stupid and that I’m just not strong enough to stand up under all the weight coming down on me at once. I know you all think I bring it on myself and that I should just stop…
She looks away, guilt seemingly beating away at her.
Bethany Kenyon: That I’m not strong enough...
She nods as she looks at her feet.
Bethany Kenyon: But then I talked to Brody and while I’m pretty sure he wasn’t trying to be profound about things, he kinda was and now I’m not asking if I’m not strong enough anymore. Because you see, I had two realizations hit me this morning while I was on the treadmill...
She looks into the camera and nods knowingly, sadly.
Bethany Kenyon: You’re right, I’m not strong enough to do everything I want to, or try to or think I need to…
Standing up, she nods defiantly.
Bethany Kenyon: But I’m gonna try anyway because I will be damned if I let somebody drown when all I needed to do was reach out a hand. Laugh, make fun of me all you want, call me a stupid Barbie and then ask me if it was worth it…
She grits her teeth, apparently angered by the question.
Bethany Kenyon: I got laughed at about everything like that and it got me some of the best friends I’ve ever had, two jobs I love, the UWA World Tag Team Championships and the UWA World Championship so I’d say I’m doing pretty well for someone who ain’t strong enough to stand up to somebody like Sentinel or Joshua McBride or Kyle Travis or Vince Jones!
She shrugs, looking like she almost thinks it’s the one coming next is a joke to ask too.
Bethany Kenyon: So now, the question isn’t, am I not strong enough, it’s are you not strong enough, Vince?
She shrugs, her hands coming up defensively as she knows the reaction coming with it.
Bethany Kenyon: Hey, it’s a legit question, V. You won the North American Championship off a guy most people think only won it on a fluke, then you had to cheat to keep it against my sister the first time and lost it to her on the second go-round. That’s pretty good evidence that the question at least needs to be asked, V. Are you strong enough to go where you say you wanna go?
She nods knowingly again.
Bethany Kenyon: Hey, I know how tough it is to get there, I’ve been there and I’d like to go back some day but you’ve done nothing to do away with that question for pretty much the last year…
She pauses and then waves off a criticism she knows is coming.
Bethany Kenyon: Yeah, I know, V got a lotta shit on his mind…
She glares into the camera, obviously insulted.
Bethany Kenyon: Join the fucking club! Everybody’s got a lot of shit on their minds, Vince, it didn’t make everybody have to resort to metal in their gloves to try and cheat somebody they dismissed as nothing that was half their size! So tell me, V, is Jonesy just not strong enough to stand up to a damn Barbie bitch?
She steps forward and nods to the camera as she gets to within an inch.
Bethany Kenyon: Because if you ain’t strong enough to walk the walk with me, you damn sure ain’t gonna be able to go to the top of the mountain where you seem to think you deserve to be just for breathing! I ain’t no Barbie and I ain’t no bitch, V! I’m Bethany Kenyon and I’m someone who got where you wanna go and I got there before you did so tell me again…
She leans in and turns off the picture.
Bethany Kenyon: Who’s not strong enough?
Bethany Kenyon: Hey…
Nikki nods back.
Nikki Peltier: Hey…
Bethany sighs heavily.
Bethany Kenyon: Jezzy on her way home?
